    Hi guys.

I got thru first year, but I should have done better than I did.

In 2nd year now (a Science course) and its a whole new ball game. ie. alot harder.

Well Ive finished the first term, but due to personal reasons, I am very behind. If I go on like this I think I mite not do well at the end of the year.

Is it possible to take a year out now, after one term? And then come back and do the year again next year?

Go to your Tutor asap. Send them an e-mail, there is a good chance that they will reply before Hilary Term begins on 5th January. You should talk to them specifically about going 'off books'. Make sure to go over all possible aspects and impacts of this, including any fees potentiality for the first term of second year. Also, have a chat with them about the issues surrounding why you feel going 'off books' would benefit you. Anything you say to your Tutor is confidential and they can offer a lot of support and advice. They can also ensure that all of the other services College can offer can be used to help you.

Going 'off books' for personal or financial reasons is enshrined in the College Calendar and is thus not just 'possible' but explicity permitted. Your Tutor submits the request to the Senior Lecturer, Dr. Sheila Greene. As for the timing, the best quote is 'we can pull you out 5 minutes before your Finals'. The Senior Tutor's Office and the Senior Lecturer's Office are generally very responsive and flexible to requests of this nature. Again, the SLO keeps everything confidential.

I would also suggest talking to the SU Education Officer, Hugh Sullivan. Hugh can explain the whole system clearly and can offer you a lot of advice on what to do next and some of the practical issues. Essentially, he'll lay out the options for you. His e-mail is education@tcdsu.org.

The key thing though, is not to worry and to contact your Tutor. Taking a year out for personal reasons is well-established and your Tutor is here to help you. It's also great just to talk over your options as that can clear things up in your mind and remove a lot of the stress.

So, go enjoy the New Year celebrations and then e-mail your Tutor and best of luck :)
