    Hi all,
Plan on starting a degree course this year in Criminology and Psychological Studies and am wondering has anyone any experience of doing the degree.
Ideally id like to get into parole officer, welfare or social work area so id like to think this is an appropiate course.
Its a total change of career and is something that interests me and i feel i could realistically pursue, whether there any jobs out there in 4 or 5 years is a different matter.
any input would be much appreciated in to the relevance of course to the type of job that id like.

Happy new year to ye all

Go for it, but I can't help but think the people who graduate from this sort of course end up working in a call centre...

thanks for the reply,a call centre is the last place i want to end up,or do you mean the samaritans or something like that.
Id just like to make sure a few years of study stand to me and not end up somewhere worse than i currently am

No, I mean tech support or customer service!

By all means do whatever you want, I would never tell someone to not follow their dreams, but if this is your "last chance" I would consider more established careers like accountancy, etc.

thanks for taking the time to reply

My other choice was enviromental studies, maybe concentrating on renewables as it wouldnt be a million miles from what im doing now,and maybe thats where the jobs are going to be in the future, just pissed off with the technical side of things at this stage.

Accountancy wouldnt interest me one bit, still not sure i know what i want to do but see a degree as a stepping stone(could be totally wrong and waste of time too)

i just noticed your post now,i was wondering did u go ahead with the course? well a little bit of advice its a very hard area to get a job in,i have a MA in criminal justice studies & as much as i enjoyed doing the course there are no jobs in ireland with it.i have applied for whatver few came up in regards to research jobs & so many people apply who have years of research exp or are working within the Gardai, its just impossible to get employment in it unless as people keep saying to me,why dont you become a guard & work your way up but i dont want to go that route otherwise i would have years ago!but as enjoyable as the academic side of it,long term its not a career option in ireland as far as i have seen!
