    hey everyone
i was just hoping for a bit of advice.had a pain in my back tooth for the last week so yesterday i went off to the dentist.in my back upper 6th i have a filling and a cavity has developed behind it so he said its either root canal or take it out.the root canal is 950euros which i do not have but my mum was saying to try and hang onto the tooth.
i just cant make up my mind.you wouldnt see the gap when i smile if i had it taken out but would it be worth getting a loan to pay for root canal??its wreckin my head!!any advice would be appreciated!!
    thanks

ok iv had a few root canals this year and also extractions. every one is different but i got to the stage where i had 3 root canals this year and decided it was to expensive to get another one so just got it pulled as it was towards the back. the dentist also agreed with me that it was the right decision.also i would ask if u get a canal you normally have to get a crown after its done which is another few hundred euro!! so make sure if u go for the canal root that the crown is included in you price! thats my 2 cents...good luck oh also root canals dont hurt at all just a very long process takes about 3 sessions.;)

i need three root canals too...hadn't been to the dentist in years...i didn't even had pain in the teeth but when i went he told me they were pretty bad...anyway..i've to make the decision.. i'm covered in terms of cost via insurance etc...but i'm just anxious about the pain and the success of the treatment... is it really painless?? and how have your teeth been since? i'd hate for the crown to fall off or look odd. can you recommend a dentist as mine says he doesn't do root canals on the teeth in question.

    thanks

I would go for the root canal rather than extraction. Don't forget you can claim tax relief up to 20% back. Unfortunately no longer 41% since January 1 2009

Just back from my second root canal appointment. It was a doddle. Not a pain did I have throughout the whole procedure. I was in severe pain over Xmas and would have quite happily been hung upside down outside a third floor window if it meant relief from that!

If you want to keep the tooth, go for a root canal but be aware that that won't be the end of it. Root canal teeth eventually need to be crowned which is extremely expensive. You could possibly have years of maintenance ahead of you after a root canal and it may even need to come out down the line in the end.

The downside of having an extraction is that your other teeth may separate or move to fill the gap that is left which can leave you with uneven/spaced teeth.

Hi OP! I had a root canel done late last year an like yourself was pretty scared as i'd heard some bad stories. I was fine. It does take a while but I did have it done in one session. It didnt cost 950 either. The dentist I used in Dublin was excellent. Pm me if you want the name and number of my dentist. Best of luck

My dentist has recommended a crown in about six months. Anyone any ideas of how much that will set me back. I haven't got the final bill for the root canal yet but dentist said between 7 and 8 hundred for that alone. He took a number of X-rays too so that will probably be extra.
