Depressed over job situation

I don't know if anybody is in the same boat but I lost my job this month and feel lost at the moment. Ok at this moment and right up to next month I am technically getting paid but I feel unemployed without having a P45 in hand. I just find it so damn hard to muster up the fight for looking for a job in this country. Everyone around me is talking doom and gloom. I am thinking seriously of going to Australia to a friend there as he says the situation is not bad or just taking a year out and going somewhere. The problem with somewhere like Oz is the visa situation. The only options around in Ireland seem to be low paid jobs or try and start off your own business and ride through 2009. I am sure I speak for a lot of people when I am writing this. I don't know what people think. Does anybody feel similar?

Well there is an awful lot of recession and economic downturn talk around at the moment. I'd suggest being proactive and actually looking for a job in Ireland or getting a visa for austrailia. Sitting down and doing nothing will definately not improve your situation

No. I'm looking hard but maybe that is the depressing bit!!!!! Found an advert for a company in Oz and am considering a year out and live in the outback or something like that

Go to Oz. Seriously, you'll have a blast and totally change your life.

I work in recruitment and I don't see things improving for quite a while. In fact, I think they're just going to get worse.

Emigrate now before the rest of Ireland does. :o

Sorry to burst your bubble but I have two mates in OZ and the situation out there is rapidly deteriorating. Neither can get jobs.

You are fresh to the market so cut back on spending, get rid of anything which can be i.e. cable telly, expensive phone calls, direct debits that are not needed. Sign up for dole. Then get out there and enjoy yourself - the world is full of things you can do. Set aside one hour a day for finding a job. Switch off the TV. Got to the gym before your membership expires. Do some online training relevant to your field that you never had time to do. Start taking photos, read a book, eat well, get fresh air every day while the weather is so good.

WAKE UP - youre alive - change your mindset about the whole thing fast.

May I ask where in Oz they are and what type of work they are looking for? I'm just back, and the situation over there is FAR from deteriorating if people are willing to work. (Don't think I'm being critical of you, just interested that's all).

I'd advise going to Oz for the year.

What's the problem with getting a visa? There are many different options available. Is it that you just don't know how to get one? Or is there another reason, like a record?

    Main ones are:
    1. Working Holiday - go for a year and work in various jobs. You need to be under 30.
    2. 457 - Get sponsored by someone in Oz who is willing to hire you. Lasts 3 years and can lead to PR (permanent residency) or you can get another one after that.
    3. PR - expensive, takes ages, but gives you a lot of freedom and you can work in Oz permanently.

There are other types (like retiral, family sponsorship) but those are the main ones. Hard to advise without knowing your field/industry but look into it in more detail and see what the story is.

You won't solve the problem by 'seriously considering' doing things, but only by doing them. An application does no harm, it doesn't commit you to anything. As kmick says, don't brood on it - get on with fun things in between, find out about courses - even Fas ones - and devote a particular amount of time each day to the job search.

It's a hard time but when I lost my job 3 years ago I didn't know how I would cope. I ended up taking a month to just stop and think, did a PT job to make ends meet, lots of reading and walking and then decided on a career change altogether.
Now I'm a totally different person and am being sponsored for a new life in Oz.

There will be a light at the end of the tunnel.
    Good luck.

take the free time to improve your skills if possible. when i was out of a job for six weeks i used the spare time to read some new material which also allowed me to talk about those skills in job interviews i went for (i.e pretend i had done them in my old job). Apart from the advantage of learning the things you hadn't time to learn before, it gives you goals to aim for - the worst thing about being out of a job is the absence of goals on a day-to-day basis. You need to feel that the time you have now is being put to good use, look at this as an opportunity...albeit one you'd prefer not to have been given. If your role isn't suitable to learning new skills from a book, then take up a new hobby for those goals, e.g jogging, swimming, etc. Also, it may take you a couple of crap interviews to get back into the swing of things, so don't lose heart. There are smug pricks around every corner when it comes to doing interviews, if you don't get the job, then at least you're one interview closer to the one that gets you a job. Finally, ignore the doom-mongers, these are the same gob****es that trumpeted the Celtic Tiger loudest, and they're now trumpeting its demise loudest too - they're simply unable to have a balanced opinion either way. Things are tough in the jobs market, but you're irish and (i assume) you're young - so you already have big advantages.

    Good luck.

Look on the brightside, I just won a substantial amount of money on the lottery.

I guess every cloud really does have a silver lining. Hope that helps.

true, you are Irish and you are young so you have better chances than me. :D

Don't give up, there are jobs out there (still) so listen to the advice above and you'd be grand.

Remember the bad times will pass. Unless the US drag us into the third World War, there will be better life, more jobs, warmer days.

You have food in the fridge, daily shower, your family, peace, lots of books and the Internet - enjoy the life even on a dole!

I'm sorry OP but I think you're being a bit melodramatic!

You've JUST lost your job and you have another months pay coming to you, you obviously have enough money to consider going traveling yet you're acting like your dog just died.

If you work on your CV, give yourself the best chance possible then it's likely you'll have another job by the end of the month.

Decide what you're going to do and then do it! Feeling sorry for yourself is pointless. There are people out there a lot worse off than you.

ok you should definitley 110% go to oz right now if thats a serious option!! im there right now was we speak. to be fair i was never the most carreer orientated person so i dont mind treading water but the opportunities are there if you really look for them, in oz that is.

you most definitely will not regret moving down here. also you might even look back at the time you lost your job as a huge turning point for you in your life in a positive way!!

And the weather is usually good in Australia, is it correct?

At least you won't miss the Irish weather. I wonder why most of my Irish friends complain about Cork's weather - I love it!!!
