Hello all, was wondering if anyone could give me advice about joining a hurling club in Dublin. Have come to the sad conclusion that it's simply not feasible to travel and play with my home club anymore due to work commitments etc.:( Could anyone advise me as to what club would be worth approaching. I live in the city centre and do not drive, was hoping to play intermediate/good junior level if at all possible. It would be great to meet a new circle of lads as well as keeping the game going, I know once the evenings lengthen I will be itching to be playing again. All replies very much appreciated - TD

On the northside, St. Vincents and Na Fianna are probably the easiest to get to from the city centre. Vincents won the Intermediate hurling championship and were narrowly beaten in the Junior B championship final, so the standard is fairly good. They're always looking for new players aswell. The only problem is possibly the membership costs. Every member has to pay into the club's compulsory lotto scheme, on top of yearly subs and insurance, and this costs around €150-200.

Na Fianna have a good set-up aswell and although still predominantly a football club, the hurling side is on the up with some very good young players. Not sure what membership fees etc are like though.

Vincents is full of arseholes though.

Tbh, every club has arseholes, including whoever you play for. Any specific reason why you singled out Vincents?

Faughs are the most successful overall, but most of their wins were in the 19th Century:p. Ballyboden are the current kingpins, they are a great club. In the city centre you can get to any club in Dublin by bus train or Luas. You could get the red line luas, get off at Suir Road and you are across the road from Good Counsel, which is a hurling oriented club. Or you could get the green line luas and get off at Kilmacud and play for Kilmacud, which is a huge club.
My advice is to look in the evening herald Dublin GAA section, they list all the clubs and their contact details. Good luck.

Sorry to hijack the thread op but i have a similar query. I ultimately gave it up due to inability to travel home to play. I'm haven't played in about 4 years now but would love to play a bit again before it's too late, would have a reasonable level of fitness. I would love to find a welcoming and friendily junior team, preferably on the south side (live in Churchtown/Rathfarnam area). I've played at a variety of levels up to Senior for around 15 years so suggestions/pm's would be welcome.

Ballyboden St. Endas and Balinteer St. Johns would be the main 2 clubs around there. Despite my intense dislike for Boden, they have a great set-up, plenty of teams and are one of the few Dublin clubs that prioritises hurling over football. Johns would be decent enough aswell but I couldn't really tell you anymore than that.

Same question I ask everybody but do you know anyone involved with either of these 2 clubs?

Unfortunately not. I know where Ballinteer St. Johns are so might have a gander there, though probably looking for a smaller club. Cheers.

Crokes would be the next closest after these 2 afaik. They're from the Stillorgan/Kilmacud area.

Faughs is pretty close too, as are St. Judes. Ballyboden are near enough Tymon park which is where those 2 I mentioned are.

Judes is a friendly progressive club. The Junior hurling sevens are hosted here. If you need a contact pm me.

What sort of hurling set-up has Whitehall Colmcille have at adult level? Many junior teams or that?

They wouldn't be the biggest hurling club. They've got 2 teams, one in AHL3 (Intermediate) and another at the bottom of AHL8 (lowest junior league). They're a decent club though, so I'd definitely give them a ring and find out.

I'm in a similar position - obviously that time of year. Played both hurling & football - thinking of taking back up the hurling (not too much spare time) .

Basically I would like to play at a level where its not taken too seriously - train no more than once a week. Ballyboden St Enda's is the local club - obviously a few other nearby. Don't know much about Ballyboden - worried that it might be too big - any tips?

As far as I can remember the 20B bus stops right outside their ground.

Personnally I would go play with the civil service hurling club - the soundest bouch of lads Ive ever met probably because none of them are from Dublin - Haha
    http://www.civilservicehurlingclub.ie/

Training is usually every Monday and Wednesday - check out the website for directions its no more than 15-20 mins from the city centre. Get back to me if your interested further and I can let you know if they are training because id say the weather has cancelled a few sessions.

Wow, you had a bad experience. It happens in life. No point in tarring everybody with the same brush.

I've been with them ~15 years and although I know no different, I have no problems with the club. Yeah, a few families have a very big influence but it's similar in most clubs. I suppose it's just not the right club for some people.

After coming across a lot of people in the club,I formed my opinion. nd it doesn't help if you've no family in the club before you ;)

Any of you spare a thought or some of your wisdom about Na Fianna maybe? awaiting an email back from them about membership on a hurling squad (juniors).

First GAA club and all that, closest one too but i'm clueless about how big they are, teams they have in what leagues etc...
