I'll be putting together a machine in the next few days and would like to go the completely free OS/Apps route.
    • Open Office is a need
    • An iTunes type of app wopuld be nice
    • Small photo retouch
    • and of course Linux itself

What version of Linux should I be looking for to download and what apps are compatible?

    Many thanks in advance

    H

Thanks for that. I use Open Office for Windows and it will fit the bill nicely. I will look into the other stuff when I get the machine sorted.

There's lot of music player type apps. I don't know much about itunes but I hear Songbird is an equivalent.

Me, I use Banshee which I like - I just play around with the Last FM plugin.

There's also Amarok which is highly praised but I think you need a KDE desktop for that (???).

amarok will run fine with GNOME, i think you can get it to sync with an ipod over wireless but i've never tried it

    Office: OpenOffice
    iTunes: RhythmBox
GtkPod - transfer files to iPod or Gnomad2 to transfer files to a Creative Player
Photos - Picasa(via Wine) or Gimp for simple to more complex retouching.

OS - the latest versions of Ubuntu or Linux Mint are good.

The Perfect Ubuntu Desktop contains everything you'll need. Bit of bloat in the guide tbh but leave out the bits you don't need and you're sorted.
