Howdy, just wondering does anyone here in the Cork area have SCTV Digital?

It's just that a neighbour of mine has some channels that I don't have, for example Film 4 on channel 217, does anyone else have this? We have the same package, Entertainment Package.

Also, I've noticed "Five" has appeared on 501 in the last few weeks, I always thought this wasn't available in Ireland:confused:

    Thanks:D

But that doesn't mean you can rebraodcast it without agreement. I wonder is there an agreement in place here?

It was reported last year (2007) that UPC was trying to do a deal with Five which would have seen it added to the Basic analogue line up.

    No.
    FTA implies nothing.

For people rebroadcasting there are these categories:
    1. Free To Carry (e.g. BBC World TV): You must have written permission, but if given there is no charge.
    2. Free To Air Royalty based (e.g. BBC, ITV, C4, Five): An annual royalty must be agreed and paid. The exact number of viewers is not important. Encryption is not required. Royalty based roughly on population coverage.
    3. Subscription Based (e.g. Sky1, Disney etc): The cost is higher, usually Free to air is prohibited by rights holder, though there can be exceptions and the cost is based roughly on the number of your subscribers.
    4. Pay per view The cost is based on actual viewers, not general subscribers. The broadcaster essentially gets a percentage commission.

For years cable, MMDS and deflector operators DID illegally broadcast UK TV without royalty payment while Dutch cable companies did pay. This "parasitism" was stopped and a condition of so called "Delflector" (Irish euphemism for illegal transmitters) legalisation was royalty payments / permissions from rights holders or original broadcasters.

The rules are exactly the same no matter if you are Satellite, cable, MMDS, Terrestrial or IPTV / Fibre based. The delivery method and number of customers is not important.
