I think i'm going to DCU next september. I live in the country so going to the "big smoke" is a hugh move for me. I just want to know if I dont get on-campus accomodation, what are the safe areas around dcu?

Despite popular belief, the Northside is the safer side of the city.

DCU is Surrounded by Whitehall and Glasnevin, which are both good areas. Further on is Santry and towards Griffith Ave, also decent to good.

Mostly, you'd only want to avoid some parts of Ballymun and Phibsboro (which arn't nearly as bad as some people let on)

I was looking into this a few months back and DCU area is generally very nice and quite friendly people, especially to the students!

Ballymun has a terrible rep but The Gateway is a big student apartment complex dropped right in ballymun and yes, there have been complaints and stories about the place, but most of the bad things i have heard have been about internal affairs like internet connections, fines and gettin back deposits.

Please read the Off Campus Accommodation section in the stickied Accommodation thread, that'll give you some info on the places around. If you have further questions feel free to ask in here.

I live in Gateway and really like it. We had problems with our net though that was due to vandalism. We have had some problems with local kids setting of the fire alarm but we have had more with people in our own block doing it then them. I got lucky and got into the tower which means nice apartment layout and big sitting room. The kitchens are a little small, but I would rather share with two others then share with four / five on campus. Also if you do get on campus stay far far far away form larkfield. The extra money for hamstead is well worth it.

I'm in Larkfield at the moment, and while it's nowhere near the nicest place to live, i'm still glad I went for it. I just liked the idea of moving into a 1st year only place so it would be easier to settle in. More so than if I went to hampstead instead and ended up living with some 3rd/4th years you didn't know.

Now that I think of it, what would people recommend for next years accommodation, Hampstead or one of the places in Shanowen? Obviously Hampstead has the advantage of location but from what I've heard it's just a bigger version of Larkfield, while one of the other places are far more comfier.

Living in Gateway at the moment and i must say i have very few complaints about the place. My apartment is really big, apparently we have the biggest apartment out of the whole complex. No issues with vandalism or anything like that. Ive walked home to gateway at all hours of the night and morning and have had no problems with scumbags or anything. Very close to DCU, only about a 10-15 min walk, it wakes you up in the morning when going to a 9am lecture :D
