Seems simple enough (I'm assuming you're flying Economy, from Ireland to the USA).
    delta.com wrote:
Latin America (South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico), the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Canada - Economy Class 2 checked bags Maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height)

So you can take two bags per passenger, once each bag doesn't weigh more than 23kgs and isn't bigger than 62 linear inches (i.e. if you have a bag thats 24 inches long, 15 inches wide and 14 inches high that's 24 + 15 + 14 = 53 linear inches)

We flew with them from Dublin to San Diego in the summer. We were allowed 2 bags each, weighing no more than 50lbs/22.5kg each. So 45kg per person transatlantic for checked in luggage.

Delta is to start charging $50 for a second checked bag on international flights from July 1st. Delta is one of the biggest carriers in the world, how long before all the other airlines follow suit?

We got stung for baggage charges on an internal Delta flight last week ( operated by Northwest but they are now basically the same airline I think). Was even worse than the Ryanair model of charging for every bag, as they charged more for each extra bag so you start getting into really silly numbers then.

hope its ok to add to this thread besides starting a new one....

flying Dublin to the States soon and looking up Deltas baggage terms there for carry on and it mentions personal items like purse, handbag or laptop case. does this mean that a small suitcase wouldnt be allowed?
I have one i bring on Ryanair flights as carry on..it fits perfectly into their overhead bin and the metal rack they size your bags on. would i be allowed to bring this on a Delta flight? they mention size restriction on the bottom of the page
Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 115 cm) in combined length, width, and height.
Baggage must fit easily in the Carry-on Baggage Check, which is located near the check-in counters and at the gate and is approximately 22" x 14" x 9" or 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters.
but it doesnt mention anything about the weight?

thinking this case would be great to have with me as checked baggage is down to 1 suitcase
