    Hi All,
Just another of the questions that I am interested in before starting a small business:
Let's say I provide services to households and I visit them at their home. What if a customer would like to pay by credit / debit card? How can I process/organise the payment and what kind of receipt should I give him/her?
    Thanks.

GPRS credit card terminals are available which work like mobile phones, alternatively your payment processor might supply you with an online terminal, you can then take your laptop with you to the job and connect to the internet using your mobile phone and input the data that way, there may be other alternatives available you should ask your merchant account bank or payment processor what options they have

worldpay can be used as an online payment processor, takes a bit of setting up but its a pretty good system and allows you to process payments over the phone also by using a form. Another more hassle free alternative would be paypal or 2checkout.com.

Try your local bank as well.
it depends on the level of business. I have a merchant account with AIB at 2.5% commission. From Memory WorldPay were looking for 4%. That could make a big difference.

You can choose from a third party payment processor i.e a company that acts as a merchant account and payment service provider rolled into one for example paypal, alternatively you can set up your own online merchant account with a bank and find a payment service provider (in Ireland the two largest are Elavon and Realex)

There are a large number of third party payment processors available nowadays so the market is fairly competitive, it pays to shop around I have listed a few below

worldpay €20-30 monthly fee, €150 sign up fee, around 4% commission per transaction
paypal no monthly fee, no sign up fee, around 4-5% commission per transaction
ClickBank Digital product payment processor $49.95 sign up, 7.5-10% commission
    2checkout $49 sign up, 5.5% commission
paydotcom free sign up, acts a market place for your products and takes a commission on sales
paypoint.net £99 sign up fee, 3.25%+20p per transaction, £10-15 monthly fee (other options available)
