This guy is just some class act. At the age of 18 and a 3lb claimer this guy rides like a guy with 20 years expierence. I dont there has ever been a finer conditional. Compare him to Paddy Mullins of the same age and the differences in class of riding are just massive. Paddy will become a fine jockey no doubt but compared to Paul there is actually a world of difference in talent between the 2. Already holding down probaly the biggest job in irish N.H Racing with ease when ruby was out and already has grade 1 winners to his name at the young age of 18. Of all the great N.H. jockeys the irish have produced over the years this guy could be the best of the lot.

A fine pilot,Willie Mullins has some pool of riders to choose from,Emmett Mullins looks a fine prospect as well.

I'd say Ruby knows he really has a serious rival for his job for the first time in years:)

We have a new breed coming through now. Carberry and Ruby prob won't last too many years more and the likes of Townend and Matt O'Connor will be snapping at their heals.

totally agree. townend is a star. i believe for a good while now that ruby is gone on. yesterday for example he just throws himself off horses with with that neptune horse. when he decides then he wants to win a race he chooses to win it in a queer horse that hardly anyone backed.

I think its a sign of his talent that he's not just winning maidens etc but is being trusted by some of the most powerful and/or shrewdest connections around.

Charles Byrnes put him up on Solwhit to win the November handicap when the serious cash was down and he's been riding very good horses of Willie Mullins.

He only has a couple of years left anyway due to his weight.

I see the benchmark in ****etalking continues to be set ever higher when it comes to Ruby. I'm not going to bother putting forward a coherent argument against you but simply ask you to watch Rubys ride on Kempes in the first in Leopardstown tomorrow, Ruby is gone? You're having a laugh son.

Some good jocks gonna graduate from the flat too, Martin Harley, Shane Foley and Emmet McNamara could make great jump jocks if they so choose to take that path while over in England Aidan Coleman is gonna be very big.

I've been singing the lads praises for a while, back when he was claiming 7lbs and riding in Dundalk on Friday evenings. He's progressed from flapping which has proved a fruitful ground for providing top Irish jockeys. The only thing that may hold him back is he's gonna have some weight issues but thats par for the course for any jockey. He's a touch weak in the finish but that'll improve as he gets older and stronger.

As for Patrick Mullins, he's never going to be anything more than a top amateur jockey and he's said as much himself. He's simply too big to do NH weights all the time and he'll follow the father into training over time imo.

I don't rate Patrick Mullins in anywhere near the same class as Townend or Matt O'Connor or even Luke McNiff and a few others.
He's roughly the same level as Katy Walsh was when winning armchair rides in bumpers.
I think it is a small bit unfair on Cousin Vinnie not having a top jockey on board.

I would agree he will go on to be a trainer as he does seem to have a good head on his shoulders.

Mullins is a very good jockey for a guy who is very far removed from the right build for a jockey. So much so they guy only has 2/3 years left as New Approach pointed out.

You cannot compare Townend to Mullins. First and foremost, don't you think if Patrick had earmarked a pro career for himself that he'd be up on all Willies horses that Paul is now riding?

Are you fishing?,the above the most ridiculous post I've ever seen on a racing forum.

He's without doubt in the top 3 (if not the best) ever exponents of the art of National Hunt horse racing that the sport has seen.

This guy is going to be bloody good. Wrote about him for Betfair recently:

    Paul Townend

I think he can become the next big thing. From all accounts, he's a nice guy too.

So long as he doesn't do too much of what he did on Sports Line at Cork today, although in fairness, I think it's the first mistake I've seen him make for a good while. Does look to have the potential to be top notch I'd agree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,500 ✭✭✭✭cson

What did he do wrong with Sportsline?

A touch weak in the finish but very little done wrong there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 341 ✭✭Diggy78

I thought he was waiting for something to come to him instead of going on and winning the race. He was in front and really should have kicked on, no point being in front 2 out and waiting till someone else has momentum before you actually push. Could be wrong but I thought it was a mistake not to go at least a furlong earlier. Not blaming him on losing the whip, that could have happened to anyone.

I reckon hell be the best jock weve seen in a while, he has loadsa experience already from the flapping and willie obviously trusts him, Danny mullins looks to be heading in the right direction aswell. there both very cool in a race

Just wondering what part of the country is Paul from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,500 ✭✭✭✭cson

    Midleton, Co. Cork.

OK, I know I'll be accused of talking out of my pocket here, but am officially not backing Paul Townend until he stops acting like Lester Piggot!! Am sick of him cruising up and waiting till the last minute to make a move. Whn you're going better, for the love of god move on and win the race, no point getting into a battle. I'm talking about Lilywhitedancer here by the way.

I'm wondering if we were watching the same race, Diggy!
Seriously, I don't know what else Townend could have done in the last furlong short of applying a blow-torch to the horse's hindquarters.
He rode Lilywhite very vigorously going to the last, he was very forceful throughout the closing stages. Horse just didn't find enough compared to Handfull Of Euros, simple as that.
