Okay I'm ****in sick of this now so I decided to post it here. Me and a friend both want to play head to head on CoD4 on PC. We're both on xfire. So when I start a listen server on my machine how the hell can he join in? He started a server, and I right-clicked his name in the xfire browser, 'join game' was there but it was greyed out. We've been tryin this for ages and my patience is gone. So how do we play each other?

He made a LAN server, you tried to connect to it over the internet. Anyone else see the problem?

Play on an internet server, or use an old version of Hamachi to create a vLAN.

So how does one host an internet as opposed to a LAN server from the in-game 'start new server' menu? Let's say I host a server on my computer- how does he connect to it from his?

Total noob here, be patient- even if I'm not.:o

Well there is a place where you can select internet or LAN , choose internet. Also your ports are probably not forwarded. Whoever is hosting the server will need to forward the ports on their router. One of the ports you need to do it for is 28960, I think you need to forward some others too.

Go to www.portforward.com if you don't know how to do this.

Have you tried giving him your external ip address and connecting manually in the console using the /connect command? go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ to find out what your external ip address is. If it does work be aware if you haven't got a static ip address then your external ip will change regularly. So your friend should type: /connect <your external ip address>:28960

One of the welcome new features of CoD5 is the ability to add friends in-game and connect to their private game, it's a pity there isn't a similar facility in CoD4.
