I am very new to the world of bike maintenance and am having a problem with the chain on my bike. I am finding that every time i apply a good bit of power while pedalling in the higher gears that there is a noise coming from the chain. the chain is lubed and clean and I was just wondering if it is the rear derailleur which needs to be adjusted? any help would be greatly appreciated.

It might be the chain rubbing against the front derailleur - depends exactly where the noise is coming from, of course.

It might be stating the obvious, but you should avoid crossing the gears too much (for example, selecting the biggest ring on the front and the biggest ring on the back at the same time - it'll inevitably rub the chain somewhere, and it's harder on the wear and tear etc.).

If you decide to have a go at adjusting the derailleur(s) then you'll find some good instructions here:

Start with small adjustments and bring lots of patience: derailleurs can be tricky beggars.

thanks for the reply bunnyhopper, im pretty sure its coming from the rear cassette. I had read that they can be a bit tricky so wanted to make sure before i did. i checked about the crossing and it still happens in the higher gears when the chain is straight as possible.
