I'm a 19 year old male college student. I want to volunteer for a charity for a few hours a week. I want to work as part of a team, I don't want to be on my own the entire time.

I also don't have the patience to work with children or the mentally handicapped, or the elderly. (I might manage the elderly actually, as long as I didn't have to wipe them or feed them. I wouldn't mind going to a hospital and keeping them company for an hour or that. I don't think I could handle Alzheimer's disease.)

I was thinking about the people who you sometimes see at night going around to the homeless people. I think they give them soup and blankets and whatnot.

Does anyone know how I'd go about this?

I know I'm a bit picky, but please feel free to suggest ideas aswell. Thanks, Disco D

    Hi There

Try the Simon Community, Focus Ireland, St Vincent De Paul if you would like to work with people that are homeless. You could ask locally and see if any community organisations or churches have anything going on. Give them a call and make sure you are sure about how much time you are able to give and for how long. A lot of charities require a min period of volunteering as they are investing as much in you as you with them!Good luck and enjoy, volunteering is a very worthwhile experience :)

There's a network of volunteer centres across the country. Check out www.volunteer.ie If you find your local centre, you can see from their website all their current opportunities.

I checked the national site and there's THOUSANDS of volunteering opportunities broken down into categories. Very impressive!
