Is anybody else sick to death of the Luas security people coming round saying "tickets please".

I'm regularly on the luas and i have never seem someone fined once for not having a ticket. I always abide by the law and have one but i really don't see the point. It happened again yesterday where 2 girls didn't have a ticket and he just told them to get off at the next stop and buy one.....:confused::confused:

So what's the point in buying one if when you get caught this happens? If they actually enforced the law, more people would buy their tickets.

This just make me angry when i pay the fare yet they don't pay the fine.

was it security or the inspectors asking for the tickets, if security, can they check for tickets

I don't know the difference, they asked me for a ticket and were wearing yellow jackets so i'm assuming ticket inspectors not doing their job. Why can't they both issue a fine?

Did they have ID apart from a yellow jacket? I'd ask for ID, sure you might call it a waste of time but if they have it, they'll be happy to show it.
Plus you get their name if you have a followup complaint.

Sure the TV license inspectors have this

I was rushing once and just hopped on a luas without paying. I always pay but this time I didnt.

I was fined. So it does happen.

    And, i'm a girl.:)

not sure my self, dont use it often enough, i do know that inspectors work on the network, to check for tickets. but i also thought that there was security as well, employed to look after passengers safety, sometimes depending on time of day, and i would wonder if they would be authorised or part of their job despcription to check for tickets

I forgot to purchase my weekly ticket one morning, and guess what... I was fined. Felt like such a fool for forgetting.

However, the inspector said that if I was a regular purchaser, then I should submit proof of my purchases and ask for the fine to be dropped.

As I always buy using laser, I was able to print out 3 months of statements showing weekly purchases, which I submitted to Luas and the fine was dropped. Well done Veolia.

Firstly the Luas system works on the principle of honesty, ie: that you will buy a ticket, therefore they have to have ticket inspectors otherwise no one would bother! I use the Luas at least twice a day and I have an annual ticket, I have been asked plenty of times for it and I have seen loads of people getting fines for not having one. Its a €40 fine i think. If you forget your annual ticket or weekly/monthly ticket they wont pursue you for the fine as long as you have the ticket or evidance of purchase.

As far as I know the ticket inspectors are not security, I think they might employ security on the Luas at night especially like now at Christmas for the late night runs.

Fair play. Thats proper order if you ask me. An honest mistake by a regular paying customer. Well done Veolia indeed.

I've frequently seen people fined on the red line - even someone with a smart card who hadn't tagged on; the inspector clearly assumed they did that with some frequency...

Well in fairness it's an easy excuse to use :)

the girls the OP noted had probably told the inspector they were boards.ie members and that they'd be straight home to post about the unfairness of it all if they were fined, especially as their pass was only six days out of date... :D:rolleyes:

there are certain times and places where fare dodging is well known, the inspectors know this and target it accordingly

Balally is hilarious to watch for some reason....

    Why so?
First (and only) time I ever went to Dundrum SC I naively got a ticket for Dundrum but I asked someone on the Luas and they said Balally was closer. It's in another zone to Dundrum though so I had underpaid.

I wasn't checked but I doubt I'm the only one who could have got caught here. Sure I was fare-dodging, wasn't intentional though, honest :)

There are two types of ticket inspector on the Luas. The first are Veolia's ticket checkers who can issue standard fares of 40 Euro.

The others are RPA employed ticket checkers who perform two functions. Firstly they monitor the fare evasion levels to make sure the figures tally with the operators. The second function is passenger counts for planning purposes for levels of service, new lines, stats for DTO and City Council transportation models.

You can tell them apart because the Ticket Inspectors from the Operator have uniforms or arm bands ( sometimes they travel in plain clothes) and the others are always in plain clothes, have name tags and sometimes hand held recorders.

There are also occasional RPA "Mystery Shoppers" who pretend to be members of the travelling public to check the quality of service from Veolia.

The Ticket Inspectors can use their discretion and ask people to buy a ticket at the next stop, simply eject them from the Tram or issue a standard fare.

I have had my ticket checked many times ( Mainly I travel on the Red Line ) and thankfully always have had a valid ticket but I've seen plenty of people ejected or fined and on occasion I have seen the Guards called.
