I wonder will we see these two major chains dissappearing from the irish market. Looking back, it seems like Adams always have some kind of sale on to get people in, but I always thought Zavvi were very busy.

If you even bothered to read about this you;d know Zavvi in Ireland is unaffected by whats happening in the UK

sorry, I know your a mod, buts thats a bit of a smart arse answer. I 'wondered' if it would affect the buisness, I never stated it would, or that zavvi was leaving the irish market. I wanted to open a discussion on what people thought.

If you had bothered to folloow discussion on zavvi on other threads, you would have read posts stating that gift vouchers were not being sold in the run up to Christmas, because they may not be able to honour them.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055447598&highlight=zavvi

It was a fair post in my opinion, not deserving of a slap down.

I still believe if zavvi in the UK goes, that the irish buisness will follow. This would be a shame, as I dont see many others willing to take on HMV, and give fair competition to consumers.

Zavvi Ireland is not currently subject to any formal insolvency proceedings.

imho there right not to sell gift vouchers given the time thats in it, its pretty sensible cause something might happen but right now they are not affected

Bets on who's going to be in administration in Ireland? I can't see Harvey Nichols in dundrum doing all too well for one.

xtravision?? can they really compete as the digital age looms....

to be honest, anone that deals in cd's, dvd's or that type of stuff, I can see them going down quickly in the next year or two.

I still have not figured out why you cannot bring your mp3 player into the likes of HMV and get them to act as a gobetween in buying the music online for you, and loading it onto your player.

If there was an outlet that had access to every music, and software to load it onto any device, and they acted as an on the spot agent selling and loading tunes onto your player, they would do great buisness. It may not stand alone, but it would definately be worth a counter in the likes of HMV/Zavvi.

loads of people are computer airheads in this way, and they dont like using credit cards on line

I think there was something like that on the cards for buying games on the nintendo DS.

Some of the Golden Discs do that. They never got around to rolling it out into all the shops though so I'm not sure how well it's doing. I must ask.

Why would you bother going into a shop for that though if you could just do it online?

Yeah I saw that service offered in Golden Discs in Liffey Valley.
But...considering most people with mp3 players own an iPod, and iPods need to be sync'd with iTunes in order to transfer music onto them, that kiosk thing would simply not work.

And why would people burn mp3s onto a CD in the shop when they can download them cheaper or (illegally) for free at home?

Re: Adams, I think they have been going down the pan for quite a while. Noticed they have closed a few shops in the past year or so.

I'm surprised Golden Discs are even still in business to be honest, and I could easily see Tower Records going to the wall

Didnt the UK or US tower go to the wall already?? Vague memories of that happening a good while ago.

Unaffected because an Irish company can't be placed into receivership in the UK. The process takes place in Ireland, with an Irish receiver... it will take longer, but it will happen.

Feel for the people now left jobless , makes you think though.
How many closed stores will there be in all the shopping centers around the country as they all have basically the same stores.

It's such a shame to see them go, if they go, i cant see much hope of them recovering. Roxy records and other independant music/dvd stores are sure to follow. Great quote there john ^^ , really supports your point!!

I suppose there will be a big clearance sale to come in zavii stores around the country

maybe they were all a little wound up after they were told today that the ireland stores are gone into administration and they will most likely be out of their jobs.

I was in Zavvi just before Christmas and was happy to see that they had their tills fully staffed and also had floaters so the queues were very fast moving. I also noticed someone taking the time to explain to a couple all about the x-box.

I'm not a businessman but that day (and others) seemed to demonstrate good customer service.

can someone verify if brook lodge hotel in macreddin is in receivership?

was there today and one of their staff told me

I've found the staff in Zavvi in Dundrum quite helpful... I think any brick and mortar music stores are on the way out. The independents and indie stores will do OK i'd imagine, but Zavvi/HMV don't offer anything that can't be got legally/illegally on the internet.

Yes they're still taking them like any other payment, they're just not giving them out anymore because they may not be able to honour them in the future.

Was thinking that, its just i saw this on there website and was wondering if staff are enforcing it:

    http://zavvi.metafaq.com/help/welcome/southern_ireland_notice

"Unfortunately, the zavvi website will not be taking any online orders and it will not be possible to redeem Gift Vouchers / Gift Cards in store. Arrangements regarding Refunds / Exchanges and Gift Vouchers / Gift Cards will be communicated separately."

According to their website, they won't: "it will not be possible to redeem Gift Vouchers / Gift Cards in store."

Went in today just to check and was told they wont except any gift vouchers!

They have to be sent off to there auditors. Seems stupid, the money for the voucher was already given to them, i dont understand why they cant except them?

At least mine was only for €30, but im sure there are people with much more.

€30 is €30 no matter what. Someone spent that on the vouchers with the understanding that you could redeem them for goods of that value.

It is disgraceful that they can't take them. It would make you think about buying vouchers in the future!

I'm guessing that once a company is in receivership, the gift voucher is effectively a promisory note, making the holder one of a large number of company creditors, none of whom can be paid until the assets are realised and the company is wound up? Makes sense really.

UK and Irish law differs slightly when it comes to liquidations. We dont have administration in Ireland. we have liquidation, receivership or examinership.

If a company goes into receivership or examinership, there is a possibility they will come out the other side.

zavvi ireland into administration - bad for the consumer, terrible for the workers. Hopefully it will give enough marketshare back to other music/entertainment shops to kep them going.

How did golden disks survive and zavvi go under??

Looks like we might start seeing unrented empty stores in the big shopping centers soon.

How did golden disks survive and zavvi go under??

Woolworths were a major wholesaler of CDs to Zavvi and when they closed, Zavvi couldn't get stock. I don't know who Golden Discs suppliers are, but Golden Discs operate on a much smaller footprint basis.

I think HMV will seek to take over some of the Zavvi stores - probably the ones in big centres like Dundrum where they do not have an existing presence.

They won't refund the vouchers in store, I bought one for a relative as a Christmas present, I bought it in early December, (when they're accountants knew they were going into liquidation). Piss poor consumer attitude...

If you look on their site you're asked to send on your voucher in order to receive correspondence...what the hell does that mean? That doesn't actually mean I will get a refund does it???

    Lousy bared faced robbery!!!!

I went into zavvi sligo yesterday, got a few cheap dvd's. It says on the bottom of the receipt, in bold letters, "in provisional liquidation"

I've never had a problem with customer service in zavvi, staff were always polite and helpful.

One thing I will criticise is their pricing of console games and accessories - always a few euro higher than any other shops around.

How did golden disks survive and zavvi go under??

As Dudara has mentioned, Zavvi's woes are caused by the collapse of Woolworths, in particular its distribution wing EUK.

Zavvi was affected in two ways:
    1. They could not get stock of their best selling items - impacting sales but not the reason for their downfall
    2. They had to repay a £106m debt to EUK - This was unexpected, Zavvi did not have the cash and ultimately they collapsed too.

This really has nothing to do with the long term viability of Bricks and Mortar stores like Zavvi or Golden Discs. Zavvi have gone under due to a specific cash flow issue caused by another collapse (Woolworths). This is the sort of ripple effect that has everyone so paranoid because no one really knows which seemingly healthy company may be next.

With regards to the Gift Vouchers, while it is undoubtedly a major pain in the ass that holders now join the long list of other unsecured creditors there is really no reason why they shouldn't. I'm pretty sure every supplier that is owed money from Zavvi is equally precious about their money.

I knew there was something wrong when Branson pulled out of the business he started out in and made a worldwide sucess! I used to work for Virgin a few years ago and I could see the problems building up back then.

I feel for the people who will be out of work from this as some of them are the most helpful people you would ever want to encounter when your out shopping / browsing.

Plus it also sucks that i've 100eur in vouchers that are now useless!!!

Music chain refuses to redeem vouchers in store.

If you actually looked on the website, you would have seen that all vouchers bought after nov 27th will be given a full refund.
The only reason that this is even possible is that when EUK (Zavvi's main supplier) went into administration in the UK, Zavvi's management set up a seperate bank account to protect the money spent on vouchers from that point on. It was only due to difficulties following on from that date that unfortunatley now means that they cannot accept the vouchers instore.
No other business has yet even tried to make this kind of move to protect its customers in case of the worst so I think Zavvi should at least be given credit for trying to do what it could before the administraters/liquidators took the decision out of their hands.
