The Irish Army Structure

    Looked a bit online but couldn't find much. Can someone enlighten me as to the roles of each of the companies in the Irish army. I have a fair idea but not 100% sure.

    Also on its organization, need a bit of clearing up.

    The smallest unit of an army is of course one man
    Next is a section of 9 men, 8 plus 1 leader.
    Next is a platoon is made up of 2 sections plus 2 leaders.
    Next is a company which is made up of a number of platoons plus two leaders.
    Next is a battalion which is made up of a number of companies plus 1 leader.

    Is that about right?

    Section is 9 men with two corporals one in charge and one 2ic who is command of the FSG (Fire Support Group)

    Platoon is three sections with an Lt. in command also there will be a platoon sgt.

    Company is generally three platoons with a company commander who would be the rank of commandant with a 2ic of Captain

    Battalion is three or more companies. The commander will be a Lt. Col. with an Adjutant of the rank of commandant. The COYS could be broken down into Alpha and Bravo which would more than likely just be your run of the mill rifle men with all needed equipment and then you could have support company with guess what... has support weapons and then you have HQ where all the admin is done the average age profile of a hq coy would be about 82 :P


    After that you move into Brigades then onto Divisions and then onto actually armies.

    Platoon has a runner awswell dosent it?31 men in a platoon i think.

    Platoon has 3 sections plus HQ of 1 Lt, 1 Sgt and 2 Ptes

    Company has 3 rifle platoons and one weapons platoon and Coy HQ

    Battalion has 3 rifle coys, 1 support coy, HQ coy and Bn HQ

    Brigade has 3 infantry Bns, Cav Sqn, Art Reg, Sigs Coy, MP Coy, Logs Bn, Med Coy
