Some brief questions about the PS3

    Hi Guys

I'm thinking of buying a PS3 soon because I'm keen on having the ability to play blu-ray & the odd game.

My personal requirements would be to play Blue-rays/DVD's more so than games. So I have some basic questions on the playstation.

    1) It says it can play cd's & DVD's, but can it do these well?

    2) Backward compatibility - As per This Wikipedia Link It shows that the current in Production models arent backward compatible? Is this information accurate?

    3) I doubt the product contains a remote control, are accessories like this easy to come by?

    4) Reliability: I've read on these forums of late of reliability problems being identified with the blue-ray Laser especially after lots of movie play.
Is this a confirmed issue? Should I hold off on purchasing one until leter releases??

Many thanks all for your assistance and knowledge

    1) Yep, and Super Audio CD too.
    2) Current PS3s can play PSOne games, but not PS2 games.
    3) You can pick up an official Sony bluetooth remote, or a third-party IR one. Both are easy to come by.
    4) It's not a widespread problem, but it has been an issue for some people. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's an excellent dvd upscaler. Music can be burned to the hard drive etc. And as for the lasers dying it happened to me just after the warranty ran out. But the problem doesn't seem to be anywhere near as bad as the xbox RROD failures.

    1) Yep, and Super Audio CD too.

The new ones don't play SACD's.

Also, some audiophiles have noted that the plain internal dts/dd decoding done inside the ps3 is not as good as the decoding done in some (dedicated) AVProcessors.

Probably not much of a concern to most, but to be noted none the less. This is noticed on the optical output when the bitstream is compared to the decoded output.

As far as HD Audio is concerned, Over HDMI, the Bitstreaming from the ps3 is as good as any other bluray player.
