Ok, i am finished college, after 5 long years, in 6 months and am planning my escape hopefully to Canadia land. I've relations near Toronto and I've been there before and love it but havent decided where i want to go yet. I just want to know which of the major citys has the best alt/indie scene. Havent completely ruled out the US yet so if anyone has suggestions there too, i'm all ears!

    Damn, am I jealous.

Personally, I'd have to swing by Montréal, because, personally, the temptation to live in Arcade Fire's bins for a few weeks would be just too powerful. Toronto is Broken Social Scene turf, I understand.

I'm only half joking about that - not the bin thing, the band territory thing. Either band have so many awesome little satellite bands that I'd imagine their sound exherts a fairly hefty influence over the local scenes. That said, Montréal's scene in particular is famously divided between the Francophone and Anglophone performers...

In the US, isn't Portland supposed to be the current big-indie-thing?

Hey there's worse things to be doing than going through arcade fire's bin's...you never know you might find some early tapes and rarities in there too! :D

To be honest it'll probably be Toronto but it's always good to have the knowledge!

i'm thinking of heading to Montréal for the summer myself.. the music scene has a small part to play in that decision, but i know a lot of people who went there and loved it, not to mention that i don't want to go to toronto to spend the summer with more irish people, there's enough of them here :P

Ah, I love that song! I do hope Mr. Pallett will be stopping by at some stage, have managed to miss all his gigs here due to exams and forgetfulness :)

At least if one of us got to see him play in Canada we could talk about the damn show afterwards...

True, though maybe Aiken will book him for his next Irish gig, and that gig won't be during my exams *fingers crossed* :)

There has been, and for the most part still is, a lot of good stuff coming out of San Francisco.

Two bands i like are from New Your - A place to bury strangers, and les savy fav

You could do a search for bands on myspace with a major city as a search parameter. That could thor up a few things.
