I Did a Very Bad Thing

OK so my mate gets a spanking new Asus laptop for Christmas. He wants me to personalize it and add lots of plug-ins, software and other goodies .. all for free I might add. So I am taking a look over it and he is standing over demanding that I download an album by a band he likes.

I tell him about the risks of downloading illegal music but he is insistent that he wants the album right NOW. So I download some P2P software and find the album he is looking for. By this stage he was beginning to annoy me when I reminded him again of the dangers of viruses.

When I clicked to download one of the albums on the list a generic warning came up about the file containing possible malicious code etc. He told me to just STFU and get him the album. So I try to download another version. Again a message box pops up. He starts getting really pissy and impatient so I asked him again if he was sure he wanted me to go ahead with it. He agreed and I pressed the OK button.

All was fine for 10 minutes or so and then the machine shut itself down without any warning. I tried to switch it back on but it was like there was no power going into it. Repeatedly holding down and pressing the power button made no difference whatsoever. Although for some reason I could start it in Safe Mode.

Is it possible that this is some kind of trojan or could it be a hardware malfunction? And secondly do you think my mate should shoulder some of the blame if that is the case because he kept pushing me to download this illegal music?

I'm not convinced you're looking at a virus - best to try turning the system on again, or is it just refusing repeated attempts? Bit confused though, you say it was like there was no power but you still got it to safe mode?

When holding the power button down for at least 15 seconds it gives you the option how you would like to start up. It will boot up in Safe Mode no problem but when I tried to start it 'normally' it just comes up with a gray screen. Is this similar to the blue screen of death that one encounters after killing ones machine? I don't know why I am even trying to figure this out. My so-called mate kicked me out on Christmas Day completely high and dry. Maybe this is his karma for trying to leech stuff online for free.

Sounds odd, might be an OS reinstall jobby, unless you can get some antivirus software on in safe mode.

So-called mate sounds right. He pushed you - it's not your fault.

    Was thinking that alright.

It just seemed odd that it would cark it as I was trying to download illegal music. Again he was a total tosser about the whole thing and asked me to get out of his house and travel back to the other side of the city via public transport on Christmas Day. Thanks for the help but I am over the whole thing now...
