    Hi,

Our house in meath has only the 6 channels, rte 1,2, bbc1,2, channel4, and utv.

Our reception is too poor to often watch anything but rte 1 and 2 and its just rubbish more often than not.

My question is, is there a service where you pay a one time fee for a box to decode tv, freeview like, and will give a decent reception.

I've seen things like this where people just have the box and no subscription and get a certain amount of channels free.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

there are several options, you can get a satellite/reciever etc in lidl/maplin/powercity/did etc and do a self install. its not too difficult to get going but it will talk most of an afternoon to get it set up properly.

the other option is to get someone to come to your house and set it up for you this can be alot easier as they know where to point the satellite, run the cables and if you get the satellite put on a motor you can move it around and see more channels.

Yes, we have a dish with the free to air channels on it. I don't want to give Rupert Murdoch any of my hard-earned money :pac: You'll get all the British terrestrial channels plus their digital offspring (e.g. BBC3, ITV4, E4), some news channels and a few movie channels of varying quality.

If you don't want to put up the dish yourself, there are no end of people that will do it for you, usually for between €200-€300.One word of advice though - don't let them put in a second hand Sky Box. I know a couple of people who got 2nd hand sky boxes for use for free to air TV and they're a bit of a headache to use. Not worth it.

There's a Satellite board here if you're still unsure or want to ask questions.

I disagree. They are great if you plan on watching channels only at Astrea 2 and Eurobird. Automatically updated EPG. Whats wrong with that?

    Moved from Television to Satellite.

All of these options require a satellite dish then?

I was coming at it from the hassle of adding new channels. This year Channel 4, Channel 5 and More 4 went free to air. The people I know who have Sky Boxes (but not subscribing to Sky) had a trickier time adding the channels. I like the clean interface of my box and the simplicity of customizing it. However, each to their own.

Incidentally...to the OP. Be aware that if you go for the Free to Air dish option, you won't get any of the Irish stations on it. You'll still need your aerial.

And when the analogue signal goes, which could be as early as 2009 in some places, you'll need another decoder to get the irish terrestrial channels and if you want those channels to be independently available on other TV,s in your house you'll have to get another decoder for each tv! Changing times.
