PCI IDE card problem

OK - So I got the mother's Christmas present sorted with thanks to the good people here, now I'm being tasked with solving my brother's!

He got a new PC a short while ago and it naturally had SATA drive connections - he wanted to put his old IDE drive into it so he got one of these over Christmas to do the job.

It seems to be what is required but it doesn't seem to be working - the only logical reason I can see is that there's nothing powering the IDE drive.

There's no power connection on the PCI card and there's no suitable power cable going spare from the power block on the PC.

So does anyone have any experience using these and what is the way to solve it?

I can't see anything on the motherboard that would allow me to power the IDE drive, unless I use some kind of Sata power to IDE power cable (which I assume exists).

Or should the drive operate alright without power (in other words, is the problem coming from somewhere else)? I'm assuming not but you never know.

    Thanks in advance.

    The above...

Best idea, tell me what PC he got. If he made it himself, tell me the motherboard model. If it came from a company (Dell, HP, etc), tell me the make and model that he got. I say this, as often, most PC's have at least one IDE port. Also, it'll give me an idea what power connections are inside.

If you've looked inside, are the power connections black, or white? Look at

and tell me which ones are inside the case. This will help me advise you on what cable you need to get.

Actually chums I think he needs one of these :

From reading your post is sounds like you have SATA power cables inside and need to convert them to the older style IDE power point. The ones listed above seem to be converting old style connectors to the new style.

    Thanks

He got a Vostro 220 - from what I can see there was no built-in IDE slot or power adapter... all I can see are black sockets that seem to suit SATA and not IDE.

Maybe I've missed something, though, but I'm assuming the adaptor the_syco and the like have linked to is what I need.

Aye. From looking at your spec, the above thing I linked to would probably be your best bet. Before you do buy it, ensure there's a spare black sata power connection for it to go into.

    Yeah, I figured.

There's definitely a spare black sata power connection in there - although the IDE HDD has four pins in it so I assume the cable I need would be female on the IDE end (Rather than the male one you linked to).

Other than that it seems to be precisely what I need to do the job... can't believe delivery on DABS is so high, though. Am thinking of getting an NAS from there so might hang on until I do to make it worth my while.
