Sick of my life

I'm so fed up with almost every aspect of my life right now

Dont get on with pretty much any of my family [parents, 3 bros, 1 sis]

Only have about 3 true friends, the rest are a bunch of dossers

Been thinkin of just up and leaving one day to go to France
Ive heard the difference of living there, although hard/expensive, is drastic

But I really wanna go back college, and get my degree

Ive dropped out twice cos of bad choices forced on me, then took this year off, so really wanna get back in next Sept

But I also hate living in Ireland, the lack of social interest, obsession with drink, and the general abundance of eejits!

So im torn about what to do!

Go to France and enjoy my life a bit more, but gve up the chance of goin to college

Or go through the motions and stick out another 4 miserably unhappy years in Ireland to finish college

    sh*t buzz :(

    I know how you feel
    sometimes ireland gets u down
    crap weather year round
boredom kicks in which leads to depression
if you leave it long enough
all social activities revolving around getting pissed

one of my friends is about to do the moving to france thing
hes so sick of living in dublin
him and his woman are going on the 12th or 14th january for good
if you do decide to go ahead with the move i can introduce you

    just out of interest,why france?

    I speak french very well

I'd say advanced level, but not quite fluent yet

I wanna go there because ive heard the way of life is a lot different, and I need a breath of fresh air

Also, im lookin to become a photography and my old college teacher said there's great opportunities and interest over there

Interestin things to snap, and great social scene. Ive a friend from Paris, she moved here a few years ago, and said it so diff there, but in a good way

I actually start dreaming that I get up and leave cos im pissed off here, so its a sign!

But yet, im torn because of my longing to go to college :(

Go to college, get an apartment with someone laid back and sound.

    Are you dublin based?

Dublin is great compared to smaller towns, a lot more to do.

    Or,

not every qualification is a 4 year college course, look into 1 year degrees, part time, certs etc.

    Anything will serve you well.

If you speak french you have a good headstart, ive heard the french are quite arrogant about speaking english in their own land

my friends been studying the last 2 months in preparation but his french is still quite poor although hes catching on fast

his girlfriend is a native french speaker so im sure they will be ok

if your french is excellent maybe you could study photography in france

of course its always an option to study here first and then go

I decided to skip college years ago and went working thinking id go back next year etc but im 25 now and cant see myself going back at all

to be honest i still dont know if i made the right choice or not so its worth giving careful thought to it

Don't go back to college just for the sake of it, only if there is something you really want to study. A year or so living abroad could provide you with fresh perspectives and ideas about what you wanna do with your life.
Plus, don't be feeling so sorry for yourself - if you read through some of the posts on here you'll find that a lot of people would love to have 'only three true friends' as you say. Good luck!

Not to try to be contrary... but i would goto college for the sake of it.
In 5 years time it will be alot better to have a degree under your belt rather than be coming back from france without one.

Just noticed madmik suggest studying in france. i +1 it :)
a mate of mine up'ed and left, ended up in germany i think for a year or two, now he is in italy reached his postgrad and all.

(PS interesting way to go unregg'd for a post)

I wonder are you building France up to be a cure for all ills? You've got a few issues going on here. You don't like a lot of people including your own family. You've dropped out of college twice. Sounds a bit to me like you're all over the place and you don't particularly know what you want at this moment.

If you do go back to college, is it to a course you've previously dropped out of? If it isn't, are you sure that it's a course you're interested in? You sound so disillusioned with things that I wonder would you manage to get through four years of college?

I wouldn't normally be one for advocating not getting a qualification but perhaps you need to take a year out and try to sort your head. By all means move to France. The only way to know whether you like a place is to live in it. Perhaps in a year's time, you might be in a better place to decide what you want. You could even kill two birds with the one stone and go to university in France.

I think it's every Irish persons duty to leave the country. The reason so many of us grow up thinking far away fields are greener is because they are.

My mother in an alcoholic, my dad's a patronizing and controlling Muslim
My oldest brother has a mental illness, and my other 2 are in Oz
My sister is all about giving advice, when really she needs to sort out her own stuff first
You've dropped out of college twice
I knew I wanted to do photography a long time ago, but was pushed to do Art, with photography, by the career guidance teacher in 6th year
But, surprise surprise I hated every non-photography aspect of the course, as did the rest

there were 32 of us at the start of the year, then 7 graduated

after that I did a photography PLC that I loved, but I was always sick, then had to get my appendix out [thats what had me so sick] so I missed too much time to go back
If you do go back to college, is it to a course you've previously dropped out of?
Yes, but not because of disinterest. I'm going because I want to go, not because I just should, for the craic
You sound so disillusioned with things that I wonder would you manage to get through four years of college?

    Thats my point
Im sure I would enjoy college but I dont know if I'd get through it with all the other sh*t I listed that i'd hafta deal with

Ok. Thanks for clarifying a few things:) I think you should go and live in France for a while and see if it's as wonderful as you're hoping. Perhaps it will, perhaps it won't. If you're feeling a bit burned out, the break will do you good. I assume you're a young person - I don't see what difference a year will make to your starting in college. In fact, it could be the best thing for you.

How far have you gotten in your studies here, out of interest?

I'd, without a doubt, reccommend doing a degree in photography - You have an interest & a passion in it, and there's plenty of work availible. You don't need a degree in photography to work in it, but it's a handy starting point if you've no experience in business - You'll learn how to advertise yourself along with organise yourself. A Fine Art degree won't deal with these in as much detail, and will be a lot more conceptual (As I'm sure you've found out) - This suits some, but not others - I went down the FA route myself, my father's been running businesses since I knew what was going on, so have plenty of experience in that.

Don't be afraid to move, you say you have three friends, they'll stick by you, just keep in contact with them, it's always handy to have friends back home :)

Before you up and leave the country, make sure to do plenty of research into studying in France - Fee's, etc... Will your family support that if you leave? Or will you be out on your own?

Do you know anyone over in France by any chance? You might be fed up now, but it could be a different story if you land in over there. Check internet forums, and see what the story is.

Also, you mentioned that France is expensive, I think that's really only associated with the bigger cities, and even then, general cost of living will be that bit cheaper than over here.

Best of luck, whatever you decide to do anyways! :)

sick of ur life coz u dont know whether to go back to college or move to france. i'd hate to think you might actually havce some issues that will make u really sick of ur life mate. we can't choose our family, but we can choose to let them make our decisions. good to see u decided on the move to france in march/april, at least now that is somethin positive to focus on and to look forward to

    Only mid-diploma level
I woulda got it no bother if I didnt miss all the time in the 2nd year bein sick
I'd, without a doubt, reccommend doing a degree in photography
Yeah, thats why I really want one. Not because of the actual Degree, I just know I'd be much better after the course
And you have stuff like Teaching to fall back on
Before you up and leave the country, make sure to do plenty of research into studying in France - Fee's, etc..
Yeah ive been lookin but google aint comin up strong, but I'd pay the same fees as the locals cos im in the EU
Also, got a few books about moving there to work
[as opposed to a travel guidebook] so lots of good info there
Will your family support that if you leave? Or will you be out on your own?
Ill be goin it alone! which is is why I'd wanna be sure I wanna live there, and can support myself, before I even think of goin to a college over there

Thanks for all the advice! :)
