DVD playback noise

Is it normal for a Mac to spin a DVD video at what sounds like full speed during playback?
The current disc in question is an American Region 1 disc being played through VLC.

It doesn't seem to matter what region the drive itself is set to, it still makes an awful racket, and that's not even taking into account the awful insert and eject sounds it makes...

I almost never use the drive at this stage but yes, it is very loud and spins at practically full speed when accessing any disc (data, DVD movie, etc) - it's just as noisy on my Mini, previous gen. MBP and unibody MB...

That's shocking for a machine that costs so much.

It seems my old Dell Inspiron 6000 is outperforming the new MBP in more than a few departments!

I get that rarely on certain DVDs but not usually.

Strange. Unless I'm thinking of something different to what RichyX is describing, all 3 of my Macs are pretty loud when accessing CDs/DVDs so not too sure why other Macs wouldn't do it... Not that I notice too much TBH, having had an Xbox360 for 2 years has made me oblivious to DVD drive noises :D.

I've one or two DVDS that make terrible noise when playing on my macbook, much louder than the norm, they make a racket like the one heard when the macbook isnt sitting straight when a DVD is being read, almost like a grinding noise. It only happens on one or two so I put it down to the discs...
