Ps3 broke on Xmas day :(

Well it's Christmas and my Ps3 broke :( I got LittleBigPlanet for it today and put it in and then the Ps3 froze. I turned it back on and now it won't even recognize that there's a disc in it. Not even a CD or DVD.

I'm going into HMV tomorrow but I don't have a reciept. Sony's Ps3 support site says to bring it back to the retailer as Sony won't repair it, but rather they have an exchange program with retailers.

Do you think I'll have any luck considering I don't have a receipt? Do they have a list of Ps3 serial numbers or something like that so they'll be able to confirm I bought it there?

If you paid with Laser or credit card with proof that it was bought in HMV, then you may be able to get an exchange.

TBH, at this stage, it sounds like the usual Blu-Ray laser has blown by turning forcing the PS3 to turn off.
At this stage you have nothing to lose by copying your game saves to a USB key and then doing a full HDD format through the System Settings.

I do have an Xbox..which broke last October and I got it back in 2 weeks... luckily Sony support seems to be better than xbox support.

Thanks ongarite. I'll find the Laser statement and bring it in with me. Also, I have a 60GB Ps3 so what happens if I have to trade down to a 40GB? Do they refund me the difference or what?

I imagine it would have to be a like for like exchange so they would have to give you an 80GB. I don't think they'd refund the difference.

This happened to a friend of mine. When you put a disk in, does the swirly O appear in the top right corner? If it does, try going into a demo and try start the disk from there.

The exact same thing happened to my PS3 a while ago while playing COD4. It froze up and after restarting, it would not recognise I had anything in there.

I did not have a reciept either, however Sony sent out a courier company who picked it up, and a few days later I got a refurbished PS3 (it had a different serial number to my original one)....If HMV are not helpful, ring back.

I have the statement from the Laser Card/Credit Card/Whatever it is :)

Did some research and I'm in luck anyway :) I thought it might have been out of warranty (Had it since August 07) but under Irish law, all goods are covered for a period up to 6 years :)

They might have some 60GB models in the back for replacements. Thet can be brought back after a year with a recipt for a replacement.

I hope my PS3 doesn't break as I got it at ZAVVI which probably won't exist soon.

Just make sure and keep your receipt safe. It won't matter then if Zavvi are still around or not.

Ah.. nope. Under Irish law goods are covered for 'a reasonable period', which for certain products may be up to six years. As far as consoles go it's pretty much one year... according to any retailer I can think of. The transposition of the directive in Ireland didn't add anything to the existing legislation with regard to warranties unfortunately.

theres plenty of people that got their ps3 repaired or replaced for free after the 1 year was up and of course any retailer will tell ya its only 1 year,

I thought they stopped making 60gd ones though and that you could'nt buy anymore or get replacements ? ah well least you got a 60gd one anyway.

Its gb. Theyre spelt gigabytes, not gigadytes (C)

    Congrats on backwards compatibility.

The sixaxis that came with the PS3 when I bought the bundle nearly a year ago has just decided to stop working all together, well,it works when attached via a usb cable.
I bought it in tesco..so,if I bring back the controller and the receipt for the PS3 I bought how likely is it that they will replace it there and then?
surely, they might insist on the whole PS3?

how are tesco for replacing faulty electronic goods?will they just fob me off to sony?

They have refurb 60GB ones in a logistics warehouse in Dublin. Obviously every one they get back they repair and use it to replace another broken one.

Hi Ongarite, can you expand on this a bit? Do you mean turning off at the back while running?

Yes, thats what I mean. Turning off your PS3 while its running with the power switch on the back is not recommended especially if you have a lockup in a game. You are nearly guaranteed to blow the blu-ray laser by doing this.
You can turn off the PS3 when its locked up by holding down the soft-power button continously for 10 seconds.
