Effective ways to deal with someone running towards you to tackle you?

    Hey guys,

Hope you are all having a nice day. I have been wondering about this question for a while and I just remembered to ask it now. This question is not restricted to a particular style of self defense/fighting sport etc. This is just a general question on how to protect yourself against someone who is running towards you to grapple/tackle/push you i.e. how do you reduce the impact the moving force (enemy) has on you?

Now obviously if you can avoid the situation/get out of there, that's all well and good, but for the sake of (hopefully) an interesting discussion, let's say a burglar is in your house, sees you, panics and runs towards you to tackle/grapple you to the ground. Assuming you don't bang your head and are still concious after the fall, I imagine a lot of the MMA/Jiu Jitsu guys would have their way of dealing with it successfully. But my question is how to avoid falling on the ground in the first place from the force running at you?

Feel free to use youtube videos etc. I'm just very interested in this particular situation.

Kick the guy in the balls.

Think about it. Enemy running towards you, you attempt to kick him in the balls, the chances of that hit connecting is quite slim. The chances of you twisting your leg or the force of the person running towards literally out forcing (is that even a word?) you and your leg are much higher than you successfully kicking the person in the balls.

well if theyve got to the stage were there hands are at the back of ur knees as in a rugby tackle, jump ur legs back whilst pushing down on them with your stomach....or if theyre running towards u u could step to the side and stick out ur leg so as to use there momentum against themselfes...we do it in judo alot

The answer has already been given, sprawl. If it's gotten to the stage where you've been taken down 1) You haven't been practicing your sprawl enough and 2) that's what the guard is for, triangle him/her unconscious or sweep into mount and gnp the so and so, or get up and run.

Move out of the way, if he's running at you, just move out of the way, then run away yourself or engage straight away. You're not going to beat a lad who's running at you while your standing still, so let him run but don't let him hit you while he's running. But you did ask how to avoid falling on the ground in the first place from the force running at you, so I guess sprawl in that case, if he's in your house he probably won't have a huge length of space in which he can gather much speed anyhow!

If they're coming at you from far enough away that you can telegraph it, then the defensive kick right in the chest is really powerful.

The 2nd kick in this video:

If you're asking a purely technical question about how to defend a tackle, then it depends on many variables (your own skills, the location, the exact type of attack, what an appropriate response would be etc)

Based on the question asked though - if someone is in my house and charging at me while I'm just standing there, I've obviously been taken by surprise and I can pretty much guarantee that I personally would not be able to stop myself being tackled to the ground.

I'd end up latching on to him, maybe peeing myself a little, and hoping to get my head together enough to turn things around quickly.

Twenty past four on Christmas Day and thats what you are thinking about. Was the turkey staring you down or something?

Either way, to answer your question the answer is...it depends. Size, weight, speed, distance, surroundings...its situational and your response to any attack is situational.

    Thats what PM's are for!
Seeing as your new, you can't just jump into a thread dedicated to a specific topic and start chatting about anything. For example, this being the martial arts forum, and you want to talk about simulated flying, see?

Take a visit to the newbie forum or help desk, and see how things work. :)

PM me if you need a hand.

Thanks for the tips Hannah, I'll have to get my hands on a plane in Knock airport if I'm ever stuck with some 19 stone guy running at me.

The Light Sabre trick would work equally well too but the battery could be low.

Cheers for the posts and suggestions lads, Nick Nutter got creased! How lucky was your man to land that knee on him though?

Plenty of advice there. Time to lock it up before it gets any more bizarre than what it is.
