Hey scruff! I'm going to Zakopane in few weeks.. Never been there but as I heard it's really impressing, also ski teachers are really friendly.

My friends just came back from there, they spent New Year eve in Polish mountains and were impressed by food, beer, kindness of local people and of coutse the views..

If you want skiing in southern Poland then the best thing you can do is avoid Zakopane like the plague and head just slightly over the border to Jasna in Slovakia. That's what all the Poles who take their skiing seriously do- Zakopane isn't up to much as a ski resort. The are a few slopes there but none are linked ( means travelling by bus/taxi between them ) and the largest slope is just a straight ahead affair and rather boring- in a good zip you'll be down the bottom of it in 3 minutes flat. Another annoying thing about Zakopane ( at least when I was there 2 yrs ago ) was that you had to buy a lift ticket for every single run. Highly annoying when you run out of tokens in the afternoon and theres a huge 30 minute Q to go get some more because everyone else is in the same boat.
Zakopane is popular with wealthy Poles who go there wearing expensive ski gear and then just walk around the town posing all weekend whilst never doing any skiing. Its a 'see and be seen' kinda town in the winter.

If you've already skiied Austria Id say you'll be highly disappointed by Zakopane in terms of pistes, lifts and atmosphere. I'd go to Jasna, far better, linked runs, 4 very good chair lift and a snow park and plenty to keep you amused for a few days. If theres good snow then the 2 free ride zones at the top of the hill will be open and that opens up even more hectates of mountain.
There are buses that go from Krakow to Liptovsky Mikulas ( near Jasna ) every Saturday morning around 6am and the journey takes abiout 4-5 hours. The buses are packed with locals looking for a real ski resort so try to buy your ticket a day in advance if you are going to go that way.
