HD TV Standards?

    Hi,

I think this is the right forum to ask this question.

I have a Samsung Full HD TV which I bought only a year ago and was pricey enough. We have decided to move to America and was wondering if the TV would work in America.

Obviously I will need a power converter but in theory should the TV work as the standard is HD?

    Thanks
    MJ

So that means that HD replaces the PAL and NTCS formats and how they are transmitted? Its not HD transmitted over PAL and NTCS?

    Thanks

your tv should be able to do both options now.. pal and ntsc

there isent a pal or ntsc HD its just 720p or 1080i and a full HD can take both...

The Yanks use ATSC while Europe uses DVB-T, so the tuner in the Samung will be useless and the tv can only be used as a display if connected to a set top box of some sort (e.g. ATSC tuner, satellite receiver etc).

Thanks Zaphod, thats what I was trying to find out. I understand the Tuner would be useless, but was planning on utilizing the satellite receiver. So just to spell this out.

It would work if it was only used with a satellite package which is what I was planning on doing?

    No issue with sound etc?

It may not support USA well. Check and see does it support NTSC SD and 480line Component?

    US uses 30fps / 60Hz

    Europe uses 25fps / 50Hz.

There are major differences on Digital SD too. 480 lines USA, 576 lines Europe

The USA has non-HD modes they call HD (720x640 progressive and 864x640 progressive) that may not work.

Most Digital Satellite or Digital Cable channels are not HD, but 704 x 480 30i or 720 x 480 30i based in USA.

Any Analogue or Digital Tuner from Europe is useless in USA.

The USA don't use SCART at all. All non-HD cable and Satellite boxes use Component or NTSC composite or NTSC Analog RF, not RGB or PAL composite. Some HD set-boxes don't used HDMI but Component.

The sound issue applies only to RF analogue.

Note that the USA has two satellite systems. One is not remotely European compatible. The other provider may or may not work with a European receiver. Free To Air Satellite non-Dish Network Satellite may work on some European satellite receivers.

MP3 players, Audio Cassettes are compatible.

If you have any size of DVD collection you need to bring a European DVD player and your TV. While there are DVD players in Ireland and many TVs, not just HD TVs that work perfectly for USA DVDs and USA Component or HDMI, a DVD player or TV in USA that works with PAL DVDs is very very very rare.

If you still have any VHS, these also in Europe quite often can play US tapes. Most US VHS machines won't play European PAL VHS at all.
