a day of darkness

There was once a morning when we awoke to darkness. It was well past the hour of light but mountains lay without shadow, their crests seamless to the sky, for even the moon had become redundant in the dark. We stood on street corners and gazed to the sky, but only the street lamps shone and their light gave us no warmth against a night cold that now governed the day. Nervous workers stuttered to a start, hesitant in duty but eager nonetheless to enter the familiar clusters and discuss the absent sun. I followed myself, as curiosity gave way to cold and began my working day with no real interest in work at all. The gathered groups followed a similar thread, questions and queries, answers and theories, but all was in vain because none could say he’d seen this before, none could say the sun would return.
