Global BPON, EPON & GPON subscribers to top 46 mln in 2011 Tuesday 23 December 2008 | 11:21 AM CET

Worldwide PON OLT and ONT equipment market grew 25 percent to USD 568 million in Q3, reflecting the strong growth of GPON network buildouts in North America and EMEA, the continued growth of EPON subscribers in Japan and Korea and the phenomenal growth of EPON infrastructure in China to support FTTB deployments, according to a study by Infonetics Research. Overall PON market is on track to finish the 2008 year, up 46 percent over 2007 and to continue strong double-digit annual growth through 2011 as the shift from copper- to fibre-based broadband access drives growth in the market worldwide. The EPON equipment segment has increased 38 percent in Q3 from Q2, while the GPON segment has increased 269 percent in Q3 from Q3 2007. Mitsubishi leads the worldwide PON revenue share in Q3, followed by Alcatel-Lucent in the second position. Alcatel-Lucent widens its lead in the GPON segment in Q3, with close to half of all GPON revenue, largely due to its Verizon for FiOS deployments. Cisco and PacketFront continue running neck and neck in the Ethernet FTTH equipment market, separated by only 1 point in worldwide revenue share in Q3. Worldwide BPON, EPON and GPON subscribers are forecast to top 46 million in 2011. PON equipment market is expected to grow considerably in the long-term, primarily due to heavy increases in PON deployments in China, where the major operators are deploying EPON-based FTTB networks in major metropolitan areas and will continue to do so through 2011.

GPON = Gigabit Passive Optical networking
EPON = Ethernet Passive Optical Network
BPON = Broadband Passive Optical Network

    All ways of saying Fibre.
