TV License question (yes I am going to pay)

    Hey all,

Before you attack me, I am not a student or some sponger trying to say my TV is broke and I don't use it etc. LOL :pac::pac::D

I got the note in the post about 1 week ago (Im in fully furnished rented accoms) and have not paid yet just because I've been flat out. Will do today online though.

The question is, I got a message just now from a man called Gary who said he had an important private and confidential matter to discuss with XXXX (my full name) and please call on 1850 667 100.

I rang the number and a recording said "this is credit operations, your call will be recorded"...

I can find no info about that number and its nothing to do with any of my financial companies I deal with. It's unusual the guy did not say who he was calling. I did not wait to get put through because I think its the licensing guys probably wanting me to admit on a recording I have no license at present. I'll call them later after I purchase the license. Do they use this as a method to get people. I presume they got my contact details from the landlord who had previously got a TV license at the address I reside in now.

Sounds like a debt collector rather than TV licence.

Ring the number and be vague over your name, you might find out who they are and figure out ehom they represent, but it would be TV licience.

It looks like a scam to me. Did he mention the TV License at all or you suppose that?

This was definitely your credit card company!

I dont know whay they are so cryptic when they call - I got this recently when a payment was declined. (I used my cc on an telephone transaction for which the merchant entered the wrong expiry date)

They will follow this up with a letter. Unfortunately if any transaction is fraudulent, they will deny liability if you dont call them back promptly

i know for the fact that credit card people will call your mobile, if you are not there they will leave a message to call them back and will leave contact name but they dont leave cryptic messages, they do say who they are and who they represent.

They sure dont say they have important private and confidential matter to discuss.. hmmm... or maybe your pr0n subscription just went through the roof so they need to be "private and confidential" :D:D

Always use the published number for bank / credit card, not one left on a recording or in a call, otherwise it can be a scam.

A geographic number is also cheaper than 1890 and 1850 numbers.

*usually cheaper, but not always. 1850 numbers can often be cheaper to call when on a mobile, as it's a single charge and the same regardless of length of call.

    Hi mate,

I know this thread is over a year old, but I was just wondering did you ever find out what that phone message was about?

Long story short, I got an identical voicemail this morning (same number, same name) and I too thought it was suspicious, so I typed the number into google and that's how I found this thread (the magic of the interweb eh).

I'm just wondering if you could get back to me about this because I'm anxious to find out what he wanted!

    Cheers!

Google the number you were asked to call back on first. T

here are a number of scams around.

I had a few recently from bogus Credit Card companies I don't deal with...looks like the number came via Orange Mobile (even though I havent been on Orange Mobile for 5 years)

    Be careful

Yep I did google the number he asked me to call back on, same number as in the original post. The number he called me off was private...

Why not just hide your own mobile number and call back, giving them no information about yourself until they disclose who they are.
Just say you had a missed call/voicemail message from that number.

Very easy to hang up if you're not getting anywhere with them.;)

eek, be careful! This sounds very dodgy!

Fyi, I used to work for a bank, and at one point was doing cold calls to sell credit cards for them, all totally above bord, and at first we were not allowed in a message to say who we were, just our first name, and the number.

Following a volley of complaints from angry men who got messages, via wives, kids, answering machines etc, along the lines of "hello I'm calling for jerry smith, could you ask him to call Jasmine on this number please? no I cant say what it's about" We were finally allowed to say we were calling from the XXX Bank. I remember at the time our boss saying that it wouldn't have been such a hassle if we weren't all 20-something girls with interesting names!

lol, havn't told that story in a while...

^^^ this is just one of the reasons it should be illegal to cold-call anyone, at any time, for any reason.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Hey guys, I was just wondering, has anybody heard anymore about this number? Sorry to resurrect a 2 week old thread even after its been done once, but I really don't want to ring these people back if it's a scam... not that they could get much money from me anyway!!

I don't have a credit card so it's not that and it's not a tv license issue- the license is in my landlords name and its all up to date... I'm not on bill pay on phone anymore either...

    Thanks for any info,

    Zo

Ring the Licence fee Section of An Post 1890 228528 give them your address and say that the payment is under your landlords name. I'd ask them do they ring customers. I don't think that the Licence Fee section ring customers, generally you get a letter in the post from An Post stating your Licence is now out of date.
