    Hi folks,

Was playing a few racks of 9-Ball Pool with a few mates the other night; was a good auld laugh. Where I play, its €15 per hour, but it is in a pub and the other places nearby charge per game so its slightly better value, as we get maybe 10 - 15 frames in per hour.
Was thinking afterwards, that it was a bit of a rip off cos the tables arent the best (not cleaned too often) and the cues wheren't much better - but i suppose the reason it does OK is because people are able to have a few drinks.

Where do you play and what is your clubs like? Are the tables and house cues up to scratch? Are you happy paying the rates they charge (what are the rates)? Are the facilities good or would you like to see more??

You're being ripped off, I play for 14 euro an hour, we get special rates on certain days, and we're always looked after by the manager, everytime he sees me he gives me a few vouchers for a few hours free. We also play on Brunswick Metro tables which were re-clothed in September, no silly designs just plain cloth. I bring my own cue but they have about 30 semi-decent cues already up there.

Just to add, they have a bar and a bowling alley along with the pool tables upstairs, downstairs is more for kids. Think there are 11 or 12 full sized 9 ball tables, i.e 9ft long. Also serve food during the day and good atmosphere at weekends if you're going for a game.

No, the Mardyke are purely commercial when it comes to pool, it's just something to do with your beer in there. Stupid logo's and Corona bottles draped across their cloths also. I'm talking about the Planet in Blackpool, actually heading out there in 20 minutes for a few games with the buddy.

I play free snooker as I have a full sized table in my garage, so screw you all..

*I also have no heating out there whatsoever so playing in this cold ain't gonna happen!

Anyone know a place with good tables and reasonable rates within a drive of Tallaght? Wouldn't mind driving for about 20 minutes if the place is good. Looking to take up snooker more regularly and hopefully get good!

You could also try the CYMS in newbridge, its probably only a 20 minute drive from tallaght, depending on the time of day.
It has 8 full size snooker tables, 5 of which are at a championship standard, steel backed cushions, top grade cloth, proper pockets etc., these provide a real challenge.
Then the other tables are at a high standard for your normal club table, the tables are brushed and ironed daily etc.
There is also 3 8 ball pool tables, to champ. standard also, and a nine ball table.
The cost of the pool is about €5 an hour, and the snooker is between €5 - €6 an hour, depending on the table.
Its a private members club, and all adult members get their own key to come and go as they please, membership is about €30 per year, there is also cue storage available in the club.
There are weekly competitions on a thursday night, a one frame flyer, and the pool is also integrated into this, €10 into both or €5 to play either. The one frame flyer has a league also, where the weekly results go into a larger league and at the end of the set amount of weeks, the person with the most points wins a bigger pot, around €300+.
There are also in house comps. which run over a longer time in both snooker and pool.
The club also has tea and coffey facilities, Television, Can Machine and seating if you just want to hang around and watch.
It is run by a committee, elected by the members.
It fields teams in competitions and also members play in RIBSA tournaments etc., and the club also hosts some junior ranking events and recently played host to a pro-am, which was played for by Ken Doherty, Fergal O Brien, Michael Judge, Paddy Wallace, Davy Morris and Joe Delaney.
All the members are friendly, and the club is always warm, and comfortable to play in.
Feel free to PM for more info.

Have you not tried The Spawell Dave?

It's always a good spot with good tables, a nice pint & great food. :)

I haven't tried it yet, someone else recommended it though so I'll check that out soon :) Cheers!

Went to the Spawell the other day, but all the tables were full and there was 2 or 3 more waiting, so didn't stick around.

Rang them up on Monday but they don't take bookings over the phone!

So I'd have to go down and take my chances :(

    The tables look nice though

It's been busy enough the last few nights I've been there alright.

If I'm waiting I'm generally lucky and a group using a couple of tables finish quickly. :)

Yeah I think I'll just bite the bullet and wait next time

Couple of questions: there's a sign on the bar saying 'members only' -- what's the deal with that? Do you have to actually be a member to play? How much does membership cost?

And do they have cues you can borrow? I'm assuming so, but just in case, since tis a proper club not like the spawell :p

Nope, I think that's just purely there to prevent idiots coming in to play.

    I haven't got a bog. :)

Yep, they're just by the door when you go in.

Went to the Spawell a couple of times recently! Nice tables, etc.

I'd certainly go back again, but it's kind of hit and miss as far as vacant tables are concerned, so the other night for example there was too many people waiting so I had to go to the Leisureplex!

Nice tables though, and a TV room to wait in if you need to. The chap working there was pleasant also

word of advice STAY AWAY FROM CROSSGUNS, its in a terrible area, badly maintained, no parking and howyas everywhere there!!

try celbridge snooker club next to the ivy rooms in carlow its the best club in the country! its in celbridge county kildare, dublin bus have a regular bus service to it!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,235 ✭✭✭Dave147

Word of advice for you, don't start throwing around terms like 'slanderous' etc as they can be deemed legal threats which is a bannable offence on boards. Also please use paragraphs and your point will be taken a little more seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,258 ✭✭✭✭DARK-KNIGHT

:(i played in crossguns a month ago and yes it is an old and traditional club but tables are badly maintained in my opinion im giving my opinion thats all people can take my advice if they want ok im not being slanderous thats ridiculous to even say that but i dont think you should try to bully anyone here its only my opinion!!!

thanks to all sorry if i caused offense but i wont take back my opinion after all its only an opinion!!!!:(

PS. zack my own father played all his snooker in crossguns in the 70s and he is also of the opinion that the club suffers badly from damp because its beside the canal! good luck to you sir

hi new here, been living in england for last 9 years, played a lot over there, pro ams etc, want to continue playing here, used to play in the dublin leagues years ago, are they still going? are there still amateur ranking tournaments? any info no matter what would be great, also what clubs have the best players?
Over in manchester most of the clubs had plenty of comps etc, any of that here?
Searched on google and yellow pages for clubs in dublin, jesus what happened to all the clubs???
We travelled to monkstown on wed night, played for a few hours, not bad will play there again, bit far though, (living in artane) going to spawell today for an hour or two, arranged to meet a pal in the crossguns thurs night, just read here about celbridge, will try and get out there at the weekend.
Any old boys out there who used to play leagues late 80's early 90's? would love to hear any news you have on the players or clubs, i remember when we played first division, there were at least 20 clubs around dublin,as i said earlier what has happened, i remember the last recession we had and the clubs were all packed out, sign of the times i guess.
    Thanks guys.
