Hello ,recently an old dimension machine is acting up a little. The screen will go black and then reappear a second later ,sometimes when it reappears the mouse is unresponsive on screen.

I'm not sure if this the graphics card ,or the power running through the machine.
    Any ideas ?
    Machine is Pentium 2GHZ
    768MB Rambus
Some sort of AGP gfx card.

    Cheers

could be HW could be SW..

run a diagnostic disk over night to see if crashes

    start , run , eventvwr
to see what the most recent logs say

usual check for viruses / malware if its running slow

if only using it for browsing and you have broadband through your network card then try a ubuntu 8.10 live CD , this bypasses the hard drive and software installed on the machine

and check the monitor cable too ;)

This seems common on old dimension pcs. I think its the onboard graphics card. Get a cheap card off ebay or somethin and that should sort you out.

thanks for the replies , I think I have ubuntu around on a disc somewhere. Good idea to see if its hardware.

I'll take out the agp card if it fails in ubuntu and stick in another ,nearly sure I have an old agp lying around somewhere.

    Cheers, happy holidays.
