    Hi Lads,
Having a look at the time capsule there and it definitely looks the way to go, just wondering if

    1 - Connects with the PS3 (Doubtful)
2 - Does it work as well as the airport extreme (why do people still buy that so)
    3 - Any drawback?

    Thanks for any advice
    Gary

I can't see any drawback on the Time Machine except maybe the price. I have a TM and an Airport Express, I use the latter to stream iTunes to my stereo.

    1) It'll work with any 802.11b/g/n devices, as either a router or as a client of another router.
    2) It's an airport extreme plus the hard drive, so yes.
    3) I've had no problems with it. I'd say functionally there's better devices out there but they don't have the zero-hassle TM backup.

Cool, I might get one so here in oz, reconditioned etc. etc.

It'll work fine with a PS3 or any other 802.11b/g/n device like Red Alert said - I have an Airport Extreme and a PS3 and there are no issues. The only reason I prefer an Airport Extreme and an external HDD connected to it for Time Machine is that if the HDD dies, I'm not left without a router if I send it back for any repair and vice-versa, if the router dies, I still have my TM backup around. I admit the TC is a more elegant setup, incorporating the HDD but the Extreme/HDD combo works just as well, just doesn't look quite as nice :).

Well one thing that would bug me would be the external hard drive plug, seperate plug, power supply, more cables etc.

Does the PS3 pick up movies etc on the time machine?? Read it doesn,t just hoping!

No, although if it'll read a network drive rather than iTunes sharing you might be able to.

Haven't tried it myself with any media but if the PS3 can read AFS, you should be fine as it can access network drives. You can also just create a separate partition on the TC, format it as FAT32 and keep media there, to be accessed by the PS3 - I think that would work but not 100% sure.

The time capsule's formatting isn't seen by the outside so you'd be fine. The backups are stored in a spare bundle, which is just like a huge zip file on the drive. So you can just make a folder in the main TC drive for your other stuff.

Nope, that won't work. The PS3 can't view NAS storage, and the Time Capsule isn't a DLNA server.

Your best bet is to stick your media on the time capsule, and stream it via your mac to your PS3.

Thanks for clarifying - my PS3 picks up most of my media on my network, but I have everything on a Windows Home Server, which is DLNA compliant so that's probably why it works.

OP, there's an app called MediaLink from Nullriver if you end up streaming content from your Mac to the PS3...

That software does look pretty good all right! Definitely get that Time Capsule when the bobs come in! Will see about a mac mini for streaming too!

Rumors are brewing about a possible update in January - which I am hugely hoping for. My Mini is starting to feel its' age at this point, but I still love it :D.

Good to know, I'll be looking for an older one anyways to use as a server. Thinking of updating my macbook on my way back through the states all right though. How much would I get for a 10 month old macbook?

Try http://www.mac2sell.net/ for a ballpark figure. IMO though, the site is a bit "generous" with the value it gives for most Macs but not hugely off the mark.

Ya got a price of £600 but am thinking it might be less than I actually get what with people not buying much and all, wonder how that would translate on boards or buy and sell?

Well you can use the Mac2Sell price to come up with a guideline price of what you feel is a fair price for it and put an ad up. On adverts.ie, you don't have much to lose anyway - worst case scenario it just won't sell there (which happened when I was trying to sell my MBP) and you'll have to find somewhere else to sell it. I have no experience with the Buy&Sell though...
