Hey there, Im having trouble connecting my ps3 to a projector. The projector only has s-video, VGA, and multi AV inputs an since it would be a sin not display it in HD, im wondering if a lead exists that will go from the back of the playstation to a VGA input? Any help would really be appeciated because an xbox is attached to it at the moment and the ps3 is getting jealous. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Get a hdmi cable, then a hdmi->vga adaptor

You will have to route your audio out through a different cable, though

Scart -> DVD player w/ surround sound is what I have.

It only has 2 speakers and 1 woofer

That wont work, has the source needs to be hdcp compatible, and anything with just a VGA input wont be.

Your only hope for HD is using component cables.

If your projector supports component over VGA (very few devices do) then you would need this cable and you need some of way of connecting the two cables together, the only way i see on DX is to buy 3 of these

If your projector does not support component you will need this

post your projector make/model - might be able to help better...

You only need HDCP if you plan on displaying bluray - not sure if it's just HD output of bluray movie, or even SD - I think it's HD only...

For gaming - you can either use S-video or Composite. Old PS2 leads can come to the rescue here, like this one http://uk.playstation.com/ps2/hardware/accessories/detail/item48466/S-VIDEO-Cable/

EDIT - found the S-video cable on komplett

i was looking into something similar myself a while back and witnessmenow's is right about the hdcp stuff ( might only apply to blueray movies since why would you encrypt a video game output)

    heres what i learned

Dvi-D (Digital) can be converted to HDMI and vice versa
Dvi-A (Analog can be converted to VGA and vice versa
Dvi-I (whats on most pc gfx cards today) is both digital and analog compatible

Much cheaper and easyer to get something like this http://www.thegametrain.com/1080p-component-to-vga-converter-ypbpr-to-rgbhv-p-182.html
    component%20to%20vga%20diagram.jpg

You can buy converters to reprocess the HDMI to VGA but most are very expensive 200 dollars + for a decent one.

this thing is right up your alley if you want to watch movies on your projector but the silly price means you would be better off buying a HDCP projector in the long run

did quick check - it's if you use the HDMI cable you will need HDCP capability on the other end... + HDMI is the only way to get 1080p
    see http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/videooutput.html

since your projector is SD why bother spending a lot of effort, etc. to get an SD signal from the HDMI socket when you can use the multi-AV connector on the back. You won't get much benefit from it - i.e. no HD but it will work.

Hey all, cheers for the replies!!
I just wanted to clarify that the model of the projector is a Canon LV-7220,its able to display 1080P, and theres no problem connecting the ps3 in Standard definition.
I thought S-video only displayed SD?and HDMI is not the only way of getting 1080P.The link you provided even says that component cables are used for 1080P.
I was thinking of trying something like this. Does anyone knows if a cable like it would be suitable?

Apologies - I read your first post badly - thought the projector was only SD. Yep, S-Video is SD only.

Downloaded spec/manual for your projector, and the specs say that it has a DVI connector - does it? If so, on page 27 it says the projector can do HDCP via the DVI connector
    see http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Multimedia_Projectors/lv/LV-7220/index.asp?specs=1

If so - a HDMI to DVI cable http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=316699 will do the trick :)

Or the VGA port can do component in, if you want to go down that route.

Hey man, Thanks for going to all that effort.I appreciate that so thanks again.
Im think I might be a bit confused, whats the difference between a dvi and a vga input?
Is it that DVI carries sound and VGA doesnt?
The projector only has one input that looks like dvi/vga and to be honest im not sure how to tell the difference between the two. Is it possible that the one input could be used for both type of jacks?

Ok, im actually retarded I think. The projector has both but I couldnt see the VGA because the xbox was already plugged into it...............ya.
Anyway, Thank you yet again mister. This is helping alot.

What im trying today is a little converter that goes straight into the ps3's HDMI slot and has a female DVI output. I have a cable that will go into the DVI and has a male VGA input that can fit into the projector.
Hopefully this will all work fine.
Ill post later about how it goes. Fingers crossed eh?!

God dammit that didnt work at all.
I screwed up and got a HDMI to DVI-D adapter even though the cables I have are DVI-A and the input is DVI-I.
I've been looking around the shops for an ordinary DVD-I cable but I cant find one.

I just bit the bullet and bought a HDMI to DVD-I cable off of ebay for €8 including shipping.
Seeing as the unsuitable adapter I already bought cost €30 euro...........this isnt going too well.
