To be honest, that price is probably the average. I found that within coutries air travel could be worth considering but once you crossed a border it was ridiculous. You could try sky airlines, They're a chilean domestic carrier so don't think they'll go to lima but you could cross border and then take a peruvian flight up to Lima. If you've any bit of time at all it's worth bussing it to save the cash.

If you don't mind connecting in Buenos Aires you could probably get a flight to Lima for around the 350 dollar mark.

    Try Expedia.com

while we're on this, what's the cheapest way to get to europe from south america? Preferably chile or argie. The cheapest flight i've found is in Sta travel here in oz, which works out about 700 euros one way. It sucks because air iberia have them for like 450eur each way but when you do it one way it charges you 900 ffs.
