Does anyone have a solution for slippery paving flags? Is there anything that can be applied to make them non-slip?

I've seen it done on steel plate flooring by coating it with epoxy resin into which some dry sand has been sprinkled, but it needs to be very clean and dry first. I guess that would work with paving slabs, but it would make them harder to clean of moss etc in the future.

The question is why are they slippery? Is it because of a build up of algae (the black stuff that our climate encourages)? If so power washing them might be a better solution.
