Today got an anoying pop up when online tellin me urgently to sign up to its Secuirty systm and it even looked like it was part of Windows similar design.
But when i when to check its website the McAfee went red waring not to trust so i closed and ignore its scary warning popup.
Then I followed the instructions from the sticky here "I think I have a virus" and it disappeared but I dont know how I did it :o

How can I prevent it from happening again.
I use Norton and it was telling me everything fine and couldnt pick up this fakie secuity system.
Forgot to add, I couldnt right click its symbol to remove on the toolbar.

What was that all about?!

Wait do you use Norton or Macafee? Please don't say both.

possibly a fake malware/spyware warning. McAfee and Norton will stop viruses, but they're not great at stopping malware/spyware. Did it look like either of these screens..?

DD: I use norton to scan and remove viruses.

I only use acAfee online to make sure that the website Im visiting is safe to use.

Is it really that I use both even though its for different things.

LL: Yes 90% the same as the first image, except its called System Security with a yellow/black sheild symbol.

Its gone now, is that good or not...?
    Advice welcome

Does this popup appearing randomly ?
If so, the best way to find out whats running the program is to.

    1. First load open you Internet Explorer (only) and then press Ctrl + Alt + Delete then go to Process and take a screen shot for the processes running in the background. Then put the screen shot in MSPAINT and save it.

    2. Then when the annoying popup appears , press Ctrl + Alt + Delete then go to Process and take a screen shot for the processes running. Then open the first screen shot you saved and see which new process has started.
    Make a note of it.

    3. Once you found the process thats runs the popup , boot into safe mode on your pc and then go to Start - Search and search for the process that calls the annoying popup. Once found delete it and then run a virus check in safe mode.

This should remove the popup for good.
    Hope this helps

Download Super Antispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) and run a scan and your computer will be sorted. Got it there a hour ago and with a quick scan it's gone.

When crossing the road do you cross with the green light and not look or do you check to make sure all is clear?

The best security is awareness; don't open emails from people you don't recognise or expect and don't click OK just because you're told to.
