Racism, discrimination and prejudice.

I wanted to post something on another thread but it was closed. I am not sure if this is ok to post so if there are any problems with it, please remove or lock it. I just wanted to clear something up for people who think otherwise. I hope it is ok to discuss as it can be a very interesting topic to debate about.

Basically what racism is, it doesn't have to be negative either. If anything I am racist for treating foreigners differantly, not badly, but differantly. They will get more attention and sympathy from me because they are foreign, regardless of skin colour. So racism doesn't have to be linked with hate. I am not sure if "good" racism is accepted either, is it?

    Anyway.

racist - discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion.

discriminate - treat differently on the basis of sex or race.

Prejudice - A judgment or opinion formed before the facts are known. In most cases, these opinions are founded on suspicion, intolerance, and the irrational hatred of other races, religions, creeds, or nationalities.

A great book which deals with all of the above (moreso prejudice) was "To Kill a Mocking Bird" by Harper Lee. Read it and you will get a great understanding of the word, or should.

I rather have a mature debate about it and have no insults or stealthy remarks aimed at people.

I think what you are saying is you are racialist rather than racist. And to kill a mockingbird sucks ass, its a terrible book.

    That’s my favourite book!

Is thread related to my sham comment? :P

You posted this in AH on purpose, right?

There should be another term for people who insist that they're not racist but..

I'll refer to them as taxi drivers for the time being.

Discrimination is discrimination, simple as. There is no such thing as positive discrimination (see the movement in the US for example), it just discriminates against another group of people.

Basically, I treat everyone the same. Everyone is a f*cking idiot until proven otherwise.

I think a lot of political correctness disguises a form of inverted racism -

    ie

"the poor (insert minority name here) are too un-evolved / unintelligent to fend for themselves so I will (put on my superman underpants and) use my keyboard to put this right''

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 34,567 ✭✭✭✭Biggins

I think we are taking the term "racism" and extending it too far.

When others mention other races/countries, etc it automatically assumed the person is speaking in racist term.

"Racism" to me is when a person speak of another person/culture not as a negative but as wishing them misfortune and/or in terms of classifying them onto a lower scale of social living.

We should be able to point out negatives about other cultures (including our own) without being called "racist".

I'm not racist. I hate everyone equally.

    +1

Agree. Condescension and bigotry masquerading as 'positive discrimination'. Minorities will only ever gain acceptance by expecting, and receiving, the same treatment as everyone else.

I never knew there was a word for positive racism. Origionaly I thought it was a typo.

Not at all kiera, I actually agree with most of your posts. So no worries ;)

Agreed, the word "racist" is thrown around too much, but when a person uses a colour or race of a person in a sentence, along with, "and I didn't get robbed/killed/raped" it is just wrong.

You can be discriminated against in a positive way also. Getting preferential treatment because of your skin colour, race or nationality. Some people will do it out of fear for being called a racist. There is no real harm in it from what I can see.

There has been many mature debates in AH. I don't see a problem with having another one. Do you?

    Racialist: (UK) Variant of racism.

I think it is the same thing mate, so negative or positive.

Racism can take both forms, positive and negative.

I was thinking of posting a thread about how annoying people are for posting "in before lock" but I thought the irony and sarcasm would be that everybody would say it.

Good thing "In before lock" means you're pretty sure the thread in question thread is going to end badly, not that you've a problem with it.

I just think that racism has been beaten to death by people talking about it blah blah blah.

We all know what it is and we know it can be bad or good.

The only way to stop it is through education.

I don't think so... Discrimination is just recognising a difference. If you offer a foreigner help with something because they are foreign and you think they will find it more difficult (language/customs barrier/whatever), this is positive discrimination. But it doesn't discriminate against your own culture since you would not have offered the help to them anyway.

That's not positive discrimination, it's just common courtesy.

You are only allowed to speak for yourself, thank you. It's obvious that you are not a regular here, or that you do not actually read the posts that people write up. If so you would know that people are completely ignorant of racism and it's meaning.

A lot of people do not know exactly what racism is, bigots etc etc.

Sometimes it's just plain old ignorance. Like the OP of the other thread, it just wasn't called for and caused me to facepalm. It was a pretty stupid conclusion even though he meant it in a positive way. However another poster jumped in to justify discriminating against people. It's a question of intent really. Yes, stereotypes are sometimes based on truth but you can't go about tarring people with the same brush, it begets ignorance and it can be hurtful, especially when it encourages others to boycott a person's services.

I could type the word "****" and be quite confident that I'm not being racist. It's just a word after all. Words don't turn you into something you're not.

You know, I couldn't get into clubs or pubs when I was younger because of where I was born and raised. Saying that, my family was very respectible. Just unfortunate that we were not born into a family of millionaires and my parents couldn't afford the big house in Foxrock or the likes. (My father is from blackrock and my grandad is from foxrock) They could only afford a council house back in the 80's. It's not nice to be tarred with the same brush. That's why I am the way I am when I post about prejudice, biased and racist comments.

I like to give everyone the chance to prove me wrong when it comes to people but TBH at the end of the day they usually prove me right..most are idiots no matter their skin colour or country of origin.
