    Does VRT on an imported car cover the road tax for the first year?

    no

    when you VRT the car they will fill out the first motor tax form, which you send off. When you get the tax back you also get the reg cert.

    I hate VRT myself but why should it? One of them is a sales tax. One of them is for driving on Irish roads.

    What you reckon would happen if the government had a policy going that would encourage importing cars by being exempt from road tax for a year? :D
