Can anyone confirm if a flat screen TV purchased in the UK will work OK in Ireland?

Is the days of UHF & VHF issues gone & will it be able to receive all channels here?

I had a faulty Samsung lcd and after months of nightmarish cutomer service and failed repairs they sent me over a new one from the UK
I googled the model no. and only found it on Argos.co.uk and a couple of UK etailers, so I presume its a tv from the UK (not sold in Ireland)
    Anyway, it works fine :)

The reason I'm asking is because I'm told that all the TV's being imported have UHF tuners only (no VHF) & that the only way to get all the normal channels in Ireland is to either use a top set box or subscribe to a Digital service such as UPC/NTL because you are actually using the tuner in the box & not the TV.

To further complicate the issue I believe that RTE are switching of VHF & enabling full digital at the last quarter of '09 & they are throwing a right whammy into the mix be going to MPEG4 while the rest of Europe are going to be MPEG2.

So, at the end of 2009 none of the TV's will get all the so called normal channels unless you have

(1). A subscription to digital service (with set top box)

(2). A third party set top box

(3). Some sort of digital converter equipment.

I'm only stating the above going on the information I'm getting from people who seem to know what they're talking about.

In fact, now that I think of it, does all this mean that the standard (non digital) UPC/NTL 16 channel package will be non functional by the end of 2009?

A lot of the very latest TV's do support MPEG4 and UHF/VHF, whether sourced in the UK or not. I know for sure that the higher-end Sony's do (the W series), and I'm pretty sure the pricier Samsungs do too.

you need uhf for rte 1,2, tv3 over the air broadcasts, vhf is for cable tv, google the model,ie sony 520 specs ,you can use a ntl cable box or sky tv,just connect by a scart cable to tv av1.
IF you want just connect an old vcr, thru uhf, channel 36, have ntl going to vcr ,aerial in, connect coax cable signal out,to tv uhf in.YOU can tune in all the stations thru the vcr tuner.IF you have 1 or 2 tvs ,subscribe to sky tv ,for 20euro you get 50stations ,ie the family pack,on ntl cable basic, you only get 15stations.if it has uhf/vhf lable that means it will work on ntl/chorus etc.
it just means over the uhf broadcasting will stop,it should not effect cable tv like ntl, i think most modern lcds have uhf/vhf tuners ,theres no harm in checking first, i presume you are buying a new tv.IF you have sky tv ,or ntl decoder you can connect thru scart anyway.

Just to clarify with me Gamer if your tv does not have vhf and you don't have set top box but require vhf channels you plug in a vcr that has a vhf uhf tuner and then tune you telly into the vcr uhf and bobs your uncle
