You should really look for a calibration utility, such as a Spyder3.

There should be other threads (try a search) which give other devices and options for calibration, but the Spyder 3 is probably one of the best.

I use a Spyder, but there are other products that do a similar job.

I got a spyder3 but still found that the photo on screen was way brighter then the prints, I tried turning the brightness way down but when I ran the calibration again it made it brighter!
I think I must be missing some secret step as the advice I found generally says to run the spyder.
I have a Dell laptop also, I gave up on its screen and got an external monitor, the images look must better on that but still too bright compared to the prints

I noticed that my prints (from photobox) were very dark. But, that seemed specific to just photobox. Not sure if that relates to your problem too?

Photobox do print dark, thats why I've stopped using them.

Yea the prints were from photobox, I thought it was them to begin with so I went to the Kodak things in boots and it was roughly the same so I then thought it was my setup

    same here

and a +1 to spyder, been using it for some time, on CRT's and now on decent LCD, can't beat it

for printing calibration you need a screen+print calibration, they are at over 400 euros but the way to go if you want to have something in paper similar to what you see on screen
don't expect a screen only calibration to give you perfect prints
