Running Sick Note

I borrowed the title from Roadrunner's training log's latest log so hope you don't mind (thanks!)

Reading through the training logs of such dedicated people there are quite a few of the regulars harbouring injuries and ailments of some sort. As we all know anything injury or sickness related that affects our plan to reach our goals gives us great cause for concern. Now, I understand the rules and I am not starting a thread to look for medical advice HM!

I thought it would be good to have a place where everybody shared whatever ailment they are currently experiencing and what they are doing about it. I am very impressed with the way some of you guys approach an injury and your recovery back to running, for example Peckham, cfitz, smochtas, --amadeus-- et al

From your logs I am learning the value of REST, pool running, core, stretching, cross training, seeing a physio (or marrying one!), seeing a doctor etc...

So on behalf of everyone else who freaks out over a stubbed toe or a head cold

What is your current running sick note?

    Thanks :D

Injury: Stress fracture in lower right leg, <something>-ular, caused from the marathon.

Prescription: Lots of sitting around doing nothing ... and drinking.

I did actually go out for a very short/ slow/ easy run yesterday, but that just proved that it was still a bit too soon to do anything more.

Patient is excused from running for another couple of weeks, or until he sobers up after Christmas.

    Patient Name: belcarra

Injury: Very sore lower back likely due to poor core stability.
Prescription: Physio told me weeks ago to do exercises to build up core but this doesn't seem to be working so well!

I'd not gone for a long run for a number of weeks but after taking up squash recently and doing an 8.5 miler last night the injury has returned greater (& sorer!) than ever.

Outlook: To be confirmed!! Will prob give it a couple of days rest to see if it gets better but if not will have to ask Santa for a Physio for XMas!

Injury: Fracture in pelvis (inferior pubis ramus)

Prescription: Zero running for the last 12 weeks and none allowed until at least early Feb :( Currently weight training, swimming and working on core strength and flexability. Also, to try and not freak out at my husband even though I'm really frustated at not being able to run with him :o.

Outlook: Really hope to return to running in the first week of February. Will be tough to start back at the basics though. Increasing the mileage too quick will just lead me back down this (painful!) road.

Injury : Pain in left shin (akin to early stress fracture) after yesterdays 14 mile slog in the rain

Prescription : Break from running, start working on core strength and more stretching.

Outlook : I've been here before on the run up to my last marathon so I'm hoping it will go away of it's own accord but it's fairly sore today so I'm a bit pissed off with it as I was just getting going on the P&D programme.

Did you have your bone density checked after this injury? If so, and it is low, hopefully you were advised on its management.

    Patient Name : Peckham

Injury : Pain in right knee that starts about 3 miles into a run.

Prescription : Haven't run in about three or four weeks. Need to address muscle imbalance - doing lots of gym work, specifically lunges and squats to address the problem. Also doing pilates.

Outlook : Scan results show it's nothing serious, so will be back running in next few days hopefully. Will take it short and slow over the next few weeks and ramp up during January all going well.

No, didn't have that checked Racing Flat. Sports physician suggested we may look at doing a dexa scan in the new year. Should be ok as I'm only 30 and my diet is fine (definitely no calorie restriction for me :p). Upping the calcium anyway just in case. More than likely just overuse. I was in some discomfort towards the later stages of marathon training and in hindsight that was a stress fracture. I continued running and on a long Sunday run did the real damage and snapped the bone in two.

    Patient Name : Thomas

Injury : Pain in left foot (plantar fasciitis I think). Pain in left hamstring.

Prescription : Massage, stretching and no whingeing!

Outlook : The hamstring issue was almost certainly caused by the pain in the foot and a changed stride. I've had this since the Connemara Ultra in April. Since then I've run 2 marathons and over half a dozen other races, so it obviously doesn't affect me too much; it would be nice to be able to run pain free, though.

Rigorous massage of the left foot has improved the situation a lot, and the discomfort is much reduced. Stretching the hamstring provides temporary relief. I didn't reduce my mileage or bin any workouts.

Injury : Pain below right knee and top of left hips since Aware race. Plus my joints (not only knees, but all) have started cracking like mad.

Prescription : Haven't run since Aware 10k. But swimming twice per week plus a bit of cycling. Glucosamine pills and cod liver oil. Missus does not kiss me anymore:rolleyes:
Rest and wine by the fire.

Outlook : Will get check out for joints in Jan & resume running slowly in Jan. 3h45 would be nice for Paris Marathon

Injury : Right Achilles very sore from around 2k into a run.

Prescription : Sitting around getting the mrs to massage it. Still not sure if it's just the new runners I bought or if it's something more serious. So for now I'll do the man thing and adopt the wait and see approach.

Outlook : Continue cycling instead of running for a while. On that note, anyone know any supports specifically for the achilles?? Should be ok for my sub 40 bid in the west of Ireland fun run with any luck.

A lot of cases for such a fit bunch of people! But hen your bodies are subject to more stresses than the average person.

What have your injuries taught you?

I learned from a pain on the outside of my right knee and hip that runners have a certain amount of mileage in them before hey do more harm than good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,544 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

I have a reverse sick note, is that allowed?

A few weeks ago the insides of my knees were in bits running.
Before that they just stopped me running altogether.
Now the pain is almost gone and only is there when I make an unusual lift of the leg.
One day when i become a real runner my pains will increase rather than decrease :D

    Patient Name : Stmochtas

Injury : Tear in right calf muscle, maybe caused by running on sand and bad warm-up, however physio reckons its very normal to get these when running

Prescription : Gym, Bike, Strength work and core.

Outlook : Start back in the new year. The injury has given me time to reflect on areas like warm-up, stretching and strength and all I want to do is get back out there.

Incidentally Mrs Peckham the physio was on a course last week. Not sure what the exact content of the course was, but part of it related to the benefits or otherwise of stretching before racing. There is a school of thought out there that suggests that stretching before a race can negatively impact on performance as it has the effect of lengthening the muscles which means they have to work harder (or something like that!). Can't remember the exact details, but she has recommended to me NOT to use stretching as a warm up, but simply do some gentle jogging.

Yes, its very rare these days that you will see athletes stretch (or do traditional stretches) pre-exercise. Dynamic warmups are what many people have been using for a few years now. Stretching, foam-rollers etc post-exercise.

    Interesting.
Might explain a few things to me as I have INCREASED my stretching pre-race over the last few months!!

    Name: Mr. Eli Wallach

Injury: Recent sharp pain from knee to ankle of right leg after run lasting for 2-3 days.

Prescription: Don't think it's shin splints (as I,ve experienced that before), so a few weeks rest may be in order, although I'm itching for a run today. I wonder do I have a stress fracture?

Outlook: Hopefully rest will see it right followed by some light training on grass/muck. If not a trip to the physio will be in order.

Injury: Possible shin splints? Dull pain in left shin, gets worse when running

Prescription: New shoes (badly needed) and some rest.

Outlook: I have no idea, never had a running injury before!

    Kirby,
I found the opposite when I had (suspected) shin splints, ie the pain lessened and eventually disappeared when I ran for any prolonged time. It came back with avengance after the run.
Simple treatment similar to that for any soft tissue damage - R.I.C.E.R and the odd deep tissue massage might help, not on the night before a race mind.

One of the few injurys where a repeat occurrence of the original cause of the condition can ease the pain of the current bout.

(Status - Newbie to posting in this forum but am a long term lurker and get a lot of advice and inspiration from the posts despite not posting!)

    Injury:
Suspected medial ligament injury to inner right knee

    Treatment:
RICE and feeling very frustrated and sorry for myself

    Short story:
Running 4 months, did Couch to 5k plan, completed Jingle Bells 5K in 31 mins and loved it, despite niggling pain to right knee - pain got worse after run hence docs diagnosis of medial ligament damage...

    Outlook:
Not sure - but am desperate to get back running ASAP!!!

Injury : Badly bruised the nail beside the bigtoe on each foot during DM.

Prescription : One 4-6m run a week (and three swimming sessions) until the replacements have grown into place.

Outlook : Unlikely to be fully sorted before starting to train for Edinburgh next month, so might take the first few weeks of training easy. Not too sure if running could cause the regrowth any bother, hence keeping the mileage right down (honest, it's nothing to do with the Christmas party season ;)).

    Patient Name : MCOS

Injury : Strain just below left butt cheek, thought it was gone but just in off the bike and its throbbing

Prescription : Normally it would be the pool but since that is closed for a few days it will be lots of sitting down and leaning right. Oh and lower abs very stiff after the new core workout... damn you DAVE_K !

Outlook : Abs will be stretched to the max after the feasting so they will be fine! The butt problem is giving me another reason not to run the 10m road race on Friday (hangover being the first ). Plenty of stretching and any session done is on low intensity this week.
