    Hi all,

As re the title I am just wondering what thoughts anyone has on the above. My wife and I are travelling to Boston in the next ten days and then thinking of driving on to Vermont for some skiing. Thing is, I looked at hiring a jeep last night, with the amount of snow up there a car would be a waste of time, so when I calculated the cost etc the bast rate was grand, seemed fair enough about 800 dollars for two weeks, but when I added insurance and all those extras that is on such as personal insurance and other stuff that I hadnt a clue of but were recommended, it came to another 700 dollars.

Do I need such extras or are they even extras. I have holiday insurance for my wife and I, just bought it online wiht Ace Insurance, but would that be enough to cover us I wonder or does that just cover us, which now writing this I suspect it does.

Thanks for taking the time to read this

    Mike

You should contact ACE insurance and ask them. Somehow I doubt it it covers incidental and accidents and theft of a car rental. When it comes to car insurance in Vermont in winter I would want to have my ass covered as much as possible. Ice on the roads, drunk driving, getting stuck in snow drifts, etc etc. Ace may cover your hospital bills but it most likely would not cover someone elses if the accident proved to be your fault, you get me? But check and double check.

I would also say that when I rented a car I always found it cheaper to do it at the airport than online.

Even if your insurance covers damage to a rental car, you could end up well out of pocket, some rental car companies charge for loss of the use of the car, and sorts of made up ****e that you could be stuck with, that your insurance company may not pay.

If you google the name of the rental companies, you'll generally find stories of people left with large bills and they can also put large charges on your credit card and then you would have to claim from your insurance.

I think the big one to have is generally the loss damage waiver, if you have that, they won't charge you for any damage to it. Things like personal accident and property should be covered with other insurance.

If you try budget.com, and you state that you are an Irish citizen rather than US, you should pick-up a fullsize SUV for less than EUR400 a week out of Logan (Boston) Airport.

I'm not sure of your dates, but I looked at eight days from 3 Jan to 11 Jan (8 days), and the total was EUR356.91 for a large SUV (JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 4WD), and as an Irish tourist SLI and CDW is included. Both these insurances will cover any accidental damage to the vehicle or any third parties should you be involved in an accident, so you'll have nothing to worry about.

I've been renting in the US for years, and have used all the major companies. If you need any further information/advice just post here or PM me.

    Cheers,

    J

Go with Hertz.com which include all the necessary insurances in the rental price. There is no excess with hertz in the USA. They will provide you with adequate LDW and CDW included in the price. No need to worry about the car then.

Looks good, but i still cant figure out if it covers you for everything.

Typical insurance policy. You just dont know what you;re not obvered for until you get fleeced and insurance company points out some small print and tells you to get lost.
