Pellet Guns - legal?

Hope this is the right forum.

Many years ago I remember a mate coming back from holidays to the Canary Islands or some such with a pellet gun. Was great fun (and probably dangerous, being about 12 at the time) shooting shoe boxes and stuff in the back garden.

My thoughts at the time and since then though is that they're illegal in Ireland because they can do harm if used incorrectly or as a weapon.

Then I went into a gadget shop in a shopping centre the last day. They were selling pistols and Ak-47 style pellet guns on the display.

Are they legal?? I'm confused at this stage.

    Thanks

See the sticky at the top of this forum, got all the info you need.

But, to give you the short answer, in 2006 a change in firearms law legalised airsoft up to 1J muzzle energy or a muzzle velocity of 328 feet per second with the standard .2g "BB".

    Hope this helps:D

I think you're actually referring to spring pistols and rifles/AEGS.

Of course they are legal how else would this forum exist?

To be honest, age 12 firing a 'pellet gun' from the Canary Islands you were probably firing a cheap spring pistol that would have been about 20-30% of the maximum limit under Irish law for such weapons. The limit is 1 joule, most of those cheap pistols fire at about .2 or .3j.

When someone says pellet gun it could be a airrifile or a airsoft device there talking about, we only deal with airsoft devices hear so i will go with that.

Any device shooting at less than 1joule ( commonly quoted at under 328fps ) with .20g bbs, is legal and classed as a toy.

I really only have the memory of the pistol.. maybe it wasn't as dangerous seeming as it would have seemed at the time ...

I guess I'll have to have a read through the stickys ... might even buy one and see exactly what it is .. then again, maybe it's a poor assumption that just because it's in a gadget shop in a well known shopping centre that's it's all above board.

hen again, maybe it's a poor assumption that just because it's in a gadget shop in a well known shopping centre that's it's all above board.

any retailer selling airsoft devices should have them checked to confirm there legal before sale

also the authorities armed and unarmed will react towards you as if it was a real firearm.

Whatever you do, dont buy from them, they're a huge rip off.

If you want an idea of reasonalbe prices and good quality try www.eirsoft.ie . Gadget shop charge over 100 for stuff that you can get for a tenner on ebay.

I'm guessing that you might be on a phone as you are one of the mods for that forum and you appear to be offline but if you are able to watch the below clip. Its some stuff from the birthday game of first venue in the country. Note: I didnt shoot that stuff, just edited it:p
