Hi , I have been considering buying a classic car. However it is difficult to source pre 78 which qualify for classic insurance and tax. I also find that many pre 78s need a lot of upkeep. I was looking at an ad on ebay, where a guy is selling an 87 celica. He states that his insurance is only 140 euro because he has another car. Can anyone tell me where I could get similar insurance for say an 80's merc or bmw.

If you join the irish vintage society you can get a classic policy, providing you have a daily car,the classic is over 20 years old and you are over 26 years old.
My chevette costs 170 eu a year to insure, not sure if bigger cars are more expensive.

I would be very interested in finding ot more about how your friend got classic insurance on his '92 car.

I tried to get it on a 91 Golf convertible earlier this year and even though I have a policy for my everyday car, a classic insurance policy & a classic commercial policy, I was told there was no way the Golf could be covered. I ended up starting a new policy on the car which has probably covered less than a thousand miles in the year..

I got a renewal notice from Axa for my '75 Cortina. Got a 100Euro better quote from Carole Nash with a smaller excess (after I went back to Axa complaining about their initial quote)....no brainer. Bye Bye Axa...

Others have expressed worries about some of the small print on Carole Nash policies, stuff like it needs to be parked in your garage every night and only covered for theft during certain hours etc. Make sure you know what you're getting for your spondoolics.

Made a few calls today. Axa would only cover cars over 20 years on their classic policy. Quoted me approx 240 for third party fire n theft on a merc. Asked them about the same car less than 20 years old and they quoted around 380.

Me too. It's my daily driver and I don't even have a second car with insurance in my own name. But it depends very much on your car and the kind of cover.

@OP - you'll just have to ring all insurers mentioned in the insurance thread in the sticky

'93 968 Tip for Eur 406 for the year.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
