You could use winrar or truecrypt

    What's your OS?
    What's the model of eHDD?

You could use the built in encryption in xp pro and vista business/ultimate.

don't forget to export keys to a floppy or usb otherwise you will never recover the data if you loose / have to reset your password or your windows install keels over and can't be repaired

There is a built in program that will do it for you. To encrypt a regular folder, right-click it and choose Properties, click the General tab, click the Advanced button, check the box "Encrypt contents to secure data". Unlike XP, Vista will warn you that doing so can make the files unavailable _IF_ you lose your ability to login to your account, so it prompts you to backup your encryption key!

Or you can download a program off the net, like http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/
I never used that sw and cannot vouch for it.

Do you know if there is a big performance hit if I use Vista's encryption on say my whole c drive? (OS folder & all)

If it were me and the files were very sensitive, I would use True Crypt.

Using a WinRar password is not secure at all and I would be kind of leery of using the built in Vista security. Of course if you are just trying to keep honest people honest, they would probably be okay.
