Need a Dell Monitor

Looking to buy a Dell LCD monitor and from looking at the website am not sure which to go for. Was thinking about a 17" widescreen to be used for gaming mainly and they have a nice one for just over a hundred euro but wanted to see what you guys think,

    Here's the link

    http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&sku=180600

Does this look like good value or will I have to trade up in a few months? There are a few 17" screens and this is by far the cheapest, the next nearest being nearly a hundred euro more expensive. Does that mean the quality on this one isn't great. Should I spend a bit more to get a good one? What's the difference in quality between this and their ultrasharp models? Also is 17" a bit too small for gaming, the only reason I was considering it is because I don't have a lot of room in the place I was going to put it.

What do you guys think

First: It doesn't need to be Dell brand. Any brand will do.
Have a look at your graphics card and see what sockets it has, probably VGA and DVI. If it has DVI then get a DVI monitor, it's much better quality (pure digital, not digital to analogue back to digital).

Second: A monitor is the single most expensive PC part (usually). It's also one of the most important in terms of how enjoyable the computer is to use. GET A GOOD ONE - it will last you several computers.

For gaming - get a 24 inch with fast response time (sub 15ms is fine, that's equivalent to 70fps+).

Spend about 300. Try komplett or elara or dabs.

    Hi compushed,

I know I don't have to go Dell but I've always been a bit pernickety about things like that so I usually like to stick to the one brand which is why I have a matching keyboard and mouse in the same colour as the XPS730. Maybe I suffer from OCD ;)

Anyway, I was thinking I should go a bit more expensive but I can't go any bigger than a 19" screen, either widescreen or standard as it won't fit where I have in mind.

I'll probably go with an Ultrasharp model even though I have no idea what that means.

Get that. It's better then the Dell monitor you linked to.

seeing the difference between a good monitor and a cheap one will have your jaw on the floor. Might be worth spending a few minutes in a bricks and mortar shop and having a look at some before buying it online.

My dad recently got a 24'' samsung for around €250 and was amazed and a little bit green to say the least when i saw how much better than my cheap 22'' it was.

As said its worth investing in a good screen as it really will effect your pc experience. For games id say a 22'' or 24" would be excellent 17'' is a bit on the small side even for general use. But maybe thats just me but if you can stretch to spending a bit more your eyes will love you for it :D

Agreed. I forked out for one of these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-028-NE which arrived this weekend. It's totally sweet and an extremely worthwhile upgrade from my older (and reliable) 19" ACER LCD monitor. Running stuff at 1920x1200 is soo much better than 1280x1024.

I agree with the above recommendation. I run an older 24" Dell 2407WFP-HC and it's really good...obviously not in the same league as Eizo or NEC for 'pro' usage, but excellent for the money as far as normal usage is concerned.

Using Windows at 1920x1200 is addictive and you won't settle for lower resolutions once you get hooked.:D For games, you can always use video card or monitor scaling if they dont run smoothly at native resolutions.
