Need two words...

In the piece I am writing at the moment, my main character travels by train to his home town, and goes into the local bar. The first draft of the story is complete and I am in the editing/revision part.

There are two words that I have used in the story because I could not think of any more specific terms for what I am describing.

First off - on old style train carriages, they had a section at the back where you could walk outside, get fresh air, have a cigarette etc. Is there a name for this "area"? I refer to it as a balcony in the first draft, but this just seems wrong and I am certain there is a more apt term.

Secondly - in some pubs, the bar area can be accessed from the main floorspace by way of a hinged piece of wood built into the bar. Does this "hinged piece" have a name, or can you think of any way to refer to it succintly?

I know this is a stupid thread, but I am at a loss to find the right words...

    Thanks!
