flashing engine light

Hi there, I wonder could anyone tell me what a flashing engine light in a 2001 Toyta Corolla might mean. I know I will need to have it checked but how important is it. Is it safe to drive over the week-end or will I do more damage. It.s not driving as smooth as it was. Thanks in advance for any replies.
